Are the Lib-Dems coming back ?

Post by Angie baby on Mon 02 Jan 2017, 12:02 pm

Lib Dems: Bouncing back from the dead in 2017?

In 2015, the Liberal Democrats had a near death experience. But 2016 was the year there were signs of life - will 2017 be their year of resurrection?

The vote to leave the EU has breathed fresh life into the UK's most pro-European major party.

This year they had a sensational by-election victory in Richmond Park, a modest uptake in national polls, and won a clutch of council seats at by-elections.

In 2017 they will be hoping to pick up more council seats and improve their national standing.
As the most full-throated advocates of the 16m people who voted Remain, they have a fresh opening.

    ........................................

As I used to be a Lib Dem supporter until they got into bed with the Tories, and as I am one of the remainers that wanted to stay in the EU, it seems that the Lib Dems might finish up being the only main party that will stand up for our continued association with Europe.

I, for one, am going to be watching this closely.

    Yes, me too Angie.

I too used to lean towards the Liberal Democrats in UK politics but after they threw in with the Tories in order to get a bit of power they wouldn't get any other way, I lost interest in them.

I do not think that their stance over Europe is going to have any lasting effect over the number of people that vote for them in the long run.

They are going to have a very long and arduous fight in order to get back to their previous level in British politics.

The easy answer to your question is NO.

The Liberal Democrats will take many years to make up for their traitorous deal with the Tories.

Yes, they really threw all of their Liberal Democrat principles out of the window when they joined up with the Tories.

Even the hard-core Lib-Dem supporters will need a lot of persuading in order to come back to the fold.

Then there is the thought that if we ever get sick and tired of Labour and the Tories we might eventually give the Liberal Democrats another chance.

Harold Wilson once said that "a week in politics is a very long time".

I am sure that he was right as the electorate have very fickle memories.
