Learner drivers: Plan to include lessons on motorways

Learner drivers will be allowed on to motorways for the first time, if new government plans are approved.

Transport minister Andrew Jones says the move would help make roads in Britain safer.

The lessons will not be mandatory and driving instructors will decide when their students are ready.

The Department for Transport is also looking at trialling a "target number" of hours of lessons to complete before learners take their test.

I have mixed feelings about this, as while learner drivers do need the experience of driving on motorways before they actually pass their test, will it be safe to have them on motorways BEFORE they have the necessary practical ability.

    Over to you folks....

I love that thread-title Paps. "Plans to let learner drivers do it on the motorways" makes me wonder what they are encouraging them to do.

Joking aside, I do see what you mean that the best way to gain experience in motorway driving is to get it by actually doing it.

I just hope that the driving instructors ensure that their pupils are confident and able enough to be safe on the motorways before they let them on to them.

One of the conditions in this new statute is going to be that it will be compulsory that all of the driving instructor cars will have to have dual controls.

THAT, is not always the case at the moment.
