Proof that we cannot trust the privateers to run the trains.

Trains on UK railways more than 20 years old, analysis shows

With rail fares rising by 2.3%, thinktank IPPR North says passengers are ‘paying through the nose for decrepit trains’.

Trains on Britain’s railways are more than 20 years old on average, the highest figure for at least 15 years, according to analysis of rolling stock.

With rail fares increasing by an average of 2.3% across the UK from Monday, a thinktank claimed that passengers were “paying through the nose for decrepit trains”.

Statistics from the Office of Rail and Road showed that trains were an average of 21 years old between January and March, the oldest they have been since July 2000 – the earliest publicly available records.

After many broken promises saying that the private TOCs are putting all of the increased fares into the upgrading of stock we all now know that this is just plain lies.

    I say: Re-Nationalise Britain's railways NOW !

I am with you all the way on this one Paps.

Wherever the profit motive drives the market all that matters is the bottom line, and a decent service at a decent price is well down the list of needs of the private companies.

The average age of rolling stock before privatisation was over 50 years. If the passengers paid the full rate of the fare without subsidy then prices would rise more than 2.3%

Railways are a relic of the past and should be tarmaced over and replaced by buses.

You are welcome to your opinion Gandhi, but even thinking about it for a second would tell you that railways are perfect for carrying large numbers of people and especially heavy goods and keeping this and other road-clogging traffic OFF the roads.

We only have a limited amount of land that can be compulsorily-purchased for more and more roads, but the railway lines that can be brought into full capacity are mostly still there after Beeching shut them down.

I would suspect that electric and hybrid trains will soon take over all of the work of the dirty diesels and that HAS to be a good thing.

I think that it is YOU that is the " relic of the past".
