Jessica Ennis-Hill: Great Britain heptathlete retires from athletics

Jessica Ennis-Hill, who won heptathlon gold for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics, has retired from athletics.

The 30-year-old had hinted at retirement after winning a silver medal at the Rio Olympics in August.

In a post on social media, Ennis-Hill - also a double world champion - said it was "one of the toughest decisions I've had to make".

"I've always said I wanted to leave on a high and have no regrets," she added.

I find this very sad as even although we could all see that she was not performing at her best in the Rio Olympics, she will be missed in the athletics of the world.

I suppose that now that records are getting virtually impossible to get nowadays and athletics is now a young-person's game, it is not surprising that Jessica had decided that it is time to go.

Her great smile will be missed from athletics in the future.

Sad to see her retire but she knows her body better than anyone else. I'm sure she would hate to keep going and be overtaken by others.

Yes, I think that was her major reason for retiring.

No athlete at her level wants to see herself dropping out of greatness as she gets older.

And of course, she now has a baby to deal with and I do not think that high-level athletics and motherhood go together very easily.

Best of luck to her in retirement, but her wonderful smile will certainly be sadly missed.

Yes, she was great to watch as our best Heptathlete.

Who is going to replace her now ?

I can still remember this happening when Daley Thompson retired from the Decathlon.

We have never really had anyone that could take his place.

The British pundits have been watching the young Katarina Johnson-Thompson of late, as if she can steer clear of injuries, ( she had a serious knee injury recently ), she could very well take the place of Jessica Ennis-Hill in the British heptathlon competitions.

At the moment she is not as good as Jessica, but there is no reason why she cannot get better and become the new darling of the British athletics scene.

    Certainly worth watching.
