What's going on at channel-crossing border controls.

Dover Delays Ease After Border Control Chaos

Queues on the route to cross the Channel are now back to "normal" levels after problems with "understaffed" border control booths.

Holidaymakers using the route to cross the Channel suffered up to 15 hours in queues after French authorities increased border checks in light of recent terror attacks.

Queues are now at expected levels for the holiday season, Kent Police has said.

It was initially feared the disruption would continue until at least Monday morning and possibly into the evening.

Police have said the "large volume" of holiday traffic coupled with heightened security checks "could mean some delays over the next few weeks".

Port authorities said French border control booths at Dover had been "seriously understaffed", claiming coaches were at one point having to wait 40 minutes each for all passengers to be checked in as only one French officer was available.

With the state of things at Dover never having been this bad before I am wondering if the French Border control checkers at Dover are being deliberately awkward or they are just not well enough manned ?

What say you good folks ?

No my dear, you could not make up a story like that.

I just hope that this is not a preview of what is going to happen at our channel border after Brexit has been fully applied.

    We shall see I guess.

It certainly does appear that it was a the French security checkers, or the lack of them, that caused the massive tailback.

I hope this does not happen again at busy times.

Maybe I am just a suspicious sod, but it did look as if the French had not put enough operatives at their checking points. WHY. I can only guess.

The end of July/beginning of August is when France virtually shuts down and goes on holiday. For a whole Month!

Only essential services keep running, and I suppose they weren't expecting to have to man the Borders at this time of year.

It can be frustrating to go to France at this time of year as many villages are virtually deserted, and pretty much the only places still opening are the butcher, baker and market. Most of the population is on the beaches in the South!

Yes, HG, you are right about that, as I too have found, much to my chagrin.

It is a bit silly though that the French border controls on the British side were not manned well enough to handle the flow of traffic at that time of year. Evil or Very Mad
