Migrants straight to Britain via the Channel

Ex-borders chief who warned of UK-bound migrant boats 5 YEARS ago 'was told they were a low priority'.

John Vine spoke out after it emerged just two Border Force cutters are patrolling the UK's 7,700-mile coastline - despite 18 Albanians being rescued from a sinking boat near Kent.

Of course it is much harder to try to get to Britain via inflatable boats across the English Channel, but I am actually surprised that not more of these desperate people have tried it.

It is now looking as if the rip-off people-smugglers are prepared to try it even if many more will die this way than crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

    Migrants

Post by Nuthin fancy on Mon 30 May 2016, 4:46 pm

    Hi all,

Rip off smugglers is an apt term Paps, they should be in jail and someone throw away the key. Don't say I did not tell you this would happen !!.

Just as predicted the 'tidalwave' of immigrants is starting to pour over from Libya, and now it will be over the north sea and channel. You are correct in pointing out we have just 3 boats to guard our extensive coastline !!!. Its a joke, but its not funny, as 'joe public' is far from happy when they end up landing on their local beach.

This will not stop. When we remin in the toxic EU it will get worse, and mark my words we will have, in the end, civil unrest in this country. Stay, and you will have NO say on border control....This is just the start, mark my words !

I don't think that this particular problem has anything to do with the EU as it is our own weak border patrols that are letting illegals come to Britain via the Channel and the North Sea.

For such a relatively small island we have a very long coastal area to cover and even if we did have dozens of even hundreds of patrols around our coastline the determined people-smugglers would still find a way in.

At the moment we have a barrier on the French side of the Channel because our border force are allowed to work on French soil. There is no guarantee that this allowed policy will continue after, and if, we pull out of Europe. France have already said as much.

Smugglers have been using the coastline of Britain to beat the authorities for years and I cannot see why the same thing cannot be done with the people-smuggling crooks.

In fact, I am surprised that it has not been done more already.

It will not matter whether we are in or out of Europe for this to happen.

If refugees want to get to Britain via the dangerous journey across the English Channel or The North Sea, then they WILL take that risk as it is better than dying in a war-torn homeland.

Desperation makes people do things that are just not reasonable during the good times.

It isn't a new phenomenon; we had cross channel boat people in the 1960's, usually Indian or Pakistani men looking for a better life. We need to beef up our security however, it is too easy as most of our ports and harbours do not have full time Immigration and Customs teams.

We need a stronger Coastguard Service as well.

Very few would disagree with that HG.

The thing is that the refugees from war-torn lands like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria, are getting out of their homelands because the local warring groups make these countries just to dangerous to live in, especially for children.

As you rightly say, we have always had what is now recognised as "economic" immigrants, but while the asylum-seekers are on top of these usual numbers, Britain is soon going to be creaking at the seams.

It is THIS worry that is going to generate most of the "out" voters, but the rest of us that are not being frightened by this will know that no matter whether we are out or in Europe these problems will not get any better by leaving Europe.

HG, many of our ports and harbours do not have any customs officers on duty at all.

After the referendum is finished, no matter what way it goes we are going to have to protect our shores much better than they are at the moment.

As in the past, we had most of the smuggling done under cover of night and this will continue with the illegal immigrants just as it was done with rum and tobacco all those years ago.

    Too true Angie.

If they are just not going to pay for customs officers working right around our Southern shores our long lengths of beaches and shallow waters will see illegal aliens continue to come to Britain.

The worst part of this is the fact that when people come into Britain under-cover of darkness there is no way that we are going to be able to count them.
