    Cashless Britain is thriving.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 24 May 2016, 12:23 pm

Cashless Britain advances as contactless and debit cards thrive.

Less than half of consumer payments were cash in 2015, while direct debits were worth 1.22tn ( Yes, that's TRILLIONS of pounds ).

Britain has passed another milestone on the path to a cashless society, with 2015 the first year that cash was used for less than half of all payments by consumers.

Cash usage will be eclipsed by debit cards and contactless payments by 2021, according to Payments UK, which represents the major banks, building societies and payment providers.

Read the full story by clicking on THIS Guardian link.

I know that contactless payments are a bit un-nerving, but as the data that is being sent to and from the payment machine is encrypted and normally no pin-number is required for this method of payment, as more and more sales outlets get set up for contactless payments, payment for anything less than 30.00 is now going to be done this way.

Although there is a risk that your contactless card in your wallet or purse can be copied by a passing scroat with a scanner - as I said in another posting - this can be easily beaten by keeping your card in a cheap metallic sheath until you want to use it. In any case, as the request signal is different every time that your contactless card is used, it can only be scanned and used once, to pay for anything by any such criminal.

I suppose that it is just laziness that makes the people go for contactless purchases or using a chip and pin credit or debit card.

I have to admit that since I started to pay for little things with my contactless card I have less change in my pocket weighing me down.

I suppose that eventually they are trying to get us to stop using cash to pay for anything.

Not a Luddite, I hope, but I do not like to have such things forced upon me.

Great point Papa, as there is no doubt that they do force us down lanes that we do not want to go.

I have those metallic sheaths for all three of my debit and credit cards and I will continue to use them until something better comes along.

I must admit that I hate it too when my purse is chock-full of small change.

It's even worse when it is in your pocket Angie. ( Change, I mean, before Gandhi manages to twist your or my words again ).

I must admit though that when I go in for an ice-cream or some other low-priced sundry, it is still easier to do it from change in my pocket than pay for it by a contactless card.

For truly cashless transactions like these named above we would have to be prepared to put up with pages and pages of small entries in our bank statements.
