    Social housing subsidies to stop.

Post by papa_umau on Mon 08 Feb 2016, 12:18 pm

Many families in England could be forced out of their council homes and be unable to afford alternative housing in the same area, new research says.

Subsidised rents for households earning more than 30,000, or 40,000 in London, will be scrapped in April 2017.

Social housing tenants will be asked to pay rent at or near market rates.
Ministers say it "better reflects people's ability to pay" - but Labour and the Local Government Association say it would hit hard-working families.

The full report from The BBC HERE

I have mixed feeling about this one as it seems to me that people earning 30 thousand out of London and 40 thousand inside London are earning enough to pay a market-rated rent without being subsidised by taxpayers cash.

    What say you ?

Of course, if you earn around 30,000 a year you should be able to pay any fair rent.

The trouble is that a lot of rents in high amenity areas are not fair at all.

I guess that is the main reason why 30,00 a year might not be enough to stay in decent quality private rented accommodation, especially living in London.

I don't know why the government do not put enforceable caps on the prices that are charged by the Rachmanneering landlords out there.

It is time to reinstate the Rent Act, which controlled the rents a landlord could charge.

I agree that something should be done again about how the levels of rents should be set, as leaving it to the free market means that the landlords have all the power while the tenants have very little.
