A boycott of Thai shrimp slave trade.

Calls mount for boycott of Thai shrimp imports after slave labour report

US politicians and human rights groups have called for a boycott of fish and shrimp products linked to slave labour in Thailand following a report from the Associated Press.

The report found that shrimp producers in Thailand forced labourers to work 16-hour days for little or no pay.

The prawns are found in products sold in the US, Asia and Europe, including Britain.

I find the modern slave trade as totally unforgivable as surely in these days of world economics there should be no place for such practices.

When you eat your Christmas shrimp cocktails give a thought for the people who are being forced to clean and shell these shrimps for your pleasure.

A guilt-trip ? maybe, but I think we should feel guilty about the anachronistic modern slave trade, don't you ?

Nobody can argue with that Paps.

It seems utterly ridiculous that slave work is still going on in these modern days.

Talk of a boycott is just not going to work as the importers of such goods know they will never get the shrimps or prawns any cheaper anywhere else.

I do not even know if the place of origin of these goods is shown on the packs before we buy them.

Yes, the "greed" aspect, HERE, only serves to protect these slavers from stopping what they are doing.

We have seen this already in clothing made in the far East by children for the likes of Primark and a few others and the pressure that has been exerted onto the heads of the importers has reduced this type of illegal trade markedly.

Now we need to do the same with food imports from Thailand and across the rest of the Far East.

I think the driving force behind this is the pressure we put on the competition for our trade by the shops that sell the cheapest.

If that is true then it is us that should be starting this boycott.

    Correct Angie.

The drive for this slave trade comes directly from us buyers.

On this occasion the boycott needs to start at the bottom and not at the top, as is usual.
