Has the BBC's independence been eroded ?

BBC independence 'eroded', says director general

By David Sillito of the BBC.

The BBC's political independence has been gradually eroded, according to the corporation's director general.

In a speech to business leaders on Monday, Tony Hall urged changes to the way the broadcaster is regulated.

He wants licence fee payers to have "a greater say than politicians".

I don't know about you good people, but I have always considered the BBC to be at the core of the "Establishment".

Because it's views are strongly influenced by the government of the day and it seems obvious that it does not even try to be even-handed in it's reporting, I think that it IS time that the viewers and listeners had more of a say in it's policy-making and it's regulation.

    What say you ?

The only "independence" they they have is the fact that they do not need to compete with the commercial TV and radio stations because we pay a tax for that.

If they had to compete they would need to work a lot harder at being independent.

I think that that is the point they are trying to make here; as once the BBC is fully privatised and the licence-fee is done away with the independence that the licence-fee used to give them would be replaced by the influence that the advertisers will then be able to put on the programme-makers.
