Majestic Wine puts cork in plans.

Majestic Wine puts cork in plans to open new stores as profits sink.

Retailer unveils 'three-year' transformation plan as costs from acquistion of Naked Wines weigh heavily.

Majestic Wine is slashing the number of new stores it plans to open after half-year profits tumbled by 50pc.

The high-street retailer's pre-tax profit fell from 8.5m in 2014 to 4.3m in the six months to September 30, largely due to costs incurred in buying online retailer Naked Wines earlier this year.

Mjestic Wine's store-opening programme has proven expensive, with costs increasing ahead of inflation, the company said today. As a result, Majestic has launched a three-year "transformation plan" that will see it scale back its target of 330 stores to just 230. It currently has 211 stores.

The rest of the story from The Telegraph HERE

I have been watching Majestic Wines for a long time and I have wondered how it can compete with the supermarkets and the other wine-specialist shops on the high street.

It's policy of trying to sell by the case was recently dropped so that they could start to sell by the bottle, but I do not see this policy bringing the chain out of trouble after it got a bit greedy and tried to buy out it's competitors.

    One to watch I think.

Even the cash and carry places are cheaper per case than Majestic Wines is and as I have my own business I easily got a trade account with Bookers wholesale.

As I seldom drink wine this is for the wife and daughter of course.

What they have done is make the same mistake that many of the failed banks made: flying too high and falling to earth as a result.

Serves them all for getting to big for their boots.

I did notice in the news that three of those bankers have been struck off working in financial services.

I bet they still got a massive leaving bonus.

I love a glass of red at home, but I would never buy my wine by the case from Majestic Wines.

I surmise that many more ordinary folk think the same ?

I don't buy or drink wine of any hue, but my daughter and wife certainly do. Even my son is a wine drinker rather than a beer drinker, like me.

When I watch the wife choosing her wines I do pay attention to the prices she pays, and I think we can not get better value for money from Aldi than anywhere else.

They have done it again and the likes of the big supermarkets and the specialist wine-shops just cannot compete with Aldi on quality or price.
