    Many Universities breach consumer laws.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 27 Oct 2015, 11:59 am

Many universities 'breach consumer law', says Which?

Three-quarters of UK universities surveyed breach consumer law by failing to provide vital information to students, Which? consumer group says.

In September, researchers compared the websites of 50 universities offering psychology courses.

Of these, 38 did not give all the details required under consumer law, including fees, contact hours, workload and teaching staff, says Which?
But university think tank million+ said websites were only part of the picture.

In March, the Competition and Market's Authority (CMA) set out how universities should comply with consumer law, including providing information to allow students to compare courses.

See the report by Judith Burns of The BBC HERE

Which? looked at the websites of 28 higher education institutions selected at random, plus 22 others whose practices had been highlighted as "unlawful" in a 2014 study by the consumer group.

Well, there you have it folks. If you have family or friends that are thinking about going to university they could do no harm in reading this BBC and Which? report and visiting "Million +".

    Consumer Law

Post by Nuthin fancy on Tue 27 Oct 2015, 1:42 pm

    Hi All,

Not surprised. When I was working in the sector they advertised courses which were not fully organised, staffed or written!!!.

It needs to get past validation committees, but there is flexibility if they can PROVE there will be resources by the time the course starts. Its flying by the seat of your pants in a way, but they are dead keen to get bums on seats. Problem is with students forking out 9,000 per year they need to get their acts together as the prospect of littigation is quite high. Again, the students want, and should expect value for their money.

There is no doubt that this is just another example of the work done by the "marketeers" as they try to sell or attract custom to their courses against a background of trying to compete with other universities for the brightest of the applicants.

You really have your knife in the backs of the "marketeers", as you call them Paps, don't you ?

Mind you I will admit that as far as competing for the best of the youngsters is concerned I am sure that it does follow many free market guidelines.

Our universities should not be like this as they should all either be free at point of delivery, state funded, or private, and if they were the youngsters that want to go to university and who have the A-level grades to do this should have their pick of which universities they want to go to.

Money should not come into it, except for the rich of course.

Could not agree more there Zath'.

You may also find a word that I have introduced that goes with the "marketeers" one; that one is the word "privateers" where although the true privateers were originally the pirates that in the olden days could plunder Spanish ships with permission from the crown, instead of just being ordinary pirates, I see the people who rip us off that come from the British private sector as "privateers" too.
