We are just living too long ?

Post by papa_umau on Wed 07 Oct 2015, 11:15 am

The number of centenarians (people aged 100 and over) living in the UK has risen by 72% over the last decade to 14,450 in 2015 - ONS figures.

With these figures in mind and understanding that although this number of people are living longer, we have to ask if the cost for doing this is just too much for the NHS ?

Do you agree that the NHS is now getting snowed under by the elderly and sick, via bed-blocking and the like, that something, anything, should be done.....AND WHAT ?

    Living too long

Post by Nuthin fancy on Wed 07 Oct 2015, 8:02 pm

    Hi All,

NO, we are not snowed under by the elderly and sick. You have said in a previous post that we arer spending our money 'wrong' on the NHS, ie Drs salaries are too hight, too many mangers and non jobs, and too much waste. I could not agree more Paps.

Also UNCONTROLLED immigration which is a major contributing factor to the costs being incurred. The old, frail and infirm of this country get a raw deal in many cases, but have contribured a lifetime of funds towards healthcare. I know what I would like for my own family and parents ( now passed on ). They deserve better, and they deserve the care.

On a personal note I try to keep healthy, I don't smoke, I run and excercise 3-4 times per week and have an occasional drink. i have aslo paid my taxes all my life and asked the state for NOTHING. Would I feel guilty if I needed to go into hospital and get cared for. NO, I would expect the same as I have fairly contributed to it; unlike the hoards of health tourists who are bleeding the health service dry.

I see what you mean there Paps, as the high numbers of elderly people who are still alive but need ever-complicated and expensive treatments in and out of hospital are costing the NHS a fortune.

The bed-blocking farce that is spoken about in many places seems not to be getting tackled as it should.

While the overall numbers of population do mean that the present services have to stretch much further, I am, unlike Technician, willing to blame all of the ills in the NHS on the immigrants.

Maybe it is time that we introduced the suicide booths that I saw in a science-fiction movie once. Suspect

    Wo hoaaaaaaah !

    "Suicide booths" ?

I may be a supporter of voluntary euthanasia, but I would not support the idea of suicide booths.

But then again, even the person who wrote that "suicide booths" idea did not support it either. After all, it was supposed to be a science fiction story.

That point exactly was on the news yesterday.

The hospitals are suffering so badly with bed-blocking that they are designing a whole new way to deal with old-folk complaints instead of sticking them into a hospital bed for days or weeks.

They now plan to deal with them in specialist elderly sections and send them home again to be looked after by home-care specialists and the general practitioners.

    Mostly private of course.....YUK !

There is NO DOUBT that the problems associated with the growing numbers of elderly patients within the NHSis now forcing the government to think about a fast shuttle service in and out of hospitals for these elderly patients instead of full medical care within the NHS.

No, the problem with the NHS is the 'outsourcing' to private enterprise which is going on by stealth all over the NHS. The 'outsourced' departments are skimming the money into their own pockets. The NHS needs to take everything back 'in house' immediately.

You are dead right HG, as whenever and wherever we see the profit motive driving services the services themselves always suffer.

    As an aside here...

Nicola Sturgeon said in her keynote speech to the faithful yesterday that if the SNP get back into power at the up-and-coming Scottish elections she promises to build a good few health centres attached to hospitals that will specialise on the needs of the growing elderly population.

A great idea, so long as she can find the money to do that without putting up the Scottish taxes too much.
