    Does austerity actually work ?

Post by papa_umau on Mon 05 Oct 2015, 11:52 am

Here is an Oxfam study about this subject:

THE TRUE COST OF AUSTERITY AND INEQUALITY.
    A UK Case Study

Around the world and in Europe and Britain, and especially Greece we have seen austerity programmes applied that are seen by rightist governments as a good way to solve the problems attached to economic strife.

I, and a few million others believe that by tightening the belt around the people who are already struggling to live only causes harm and has little effect on the actual economy of a country.

Please read the report in the link above from Oxfam about this and then tell us if you think austerity is a good thing or not.

I think that we all have to tighten our belts in hard times but the way that "austerity" programmes seem to work with this and other governments across Europe means that it is the people who are worse off that pay the most.

If these austerity actions were to properly work right across the board we would see the people accept them much more readily.

The point of austerity actions is supposed to be a way that countries can cut their overspending and start to recover their economic mistakes.

Of course, it is true that the people who pay the most into these government austerity schemes are the people who can afford the least.

If austerity was to hit the fat-cats, the bank bosses and the super-rich, it might work a bit better.

I am with you guys all the way on that one.

My old mum used to have quite a range of benefits that helped her to live reasonably, but now she is struggling to subsist.

Excuse the language peeps but it is just not bloody right ! Mad

Austerity policies always hit the poorest the hardest and HERE is the argument from The Independent newspaper.

The joint research by the London School of Economics and the Universities of Manchester and York concluded that poverty levels had been increasing for the last two years and would continue worsening for another five.

Its findings undermine government claims that the best-off would shoulder the burden of the continuing squeeze on spending aimed at reducing the national deficit.

As I see it, now, so many people and institutions are so against governmental austerity policies that very soon there are going to be very few arguments left that support this idea.

Austerity will only work if it starts at the top, never at the bottom. Polititians and big businesses should lead the way.

I take it that you mean by giving up their fair share of the cash that creates the need for austerity in the first place ?

    I agree wholeheartedly.
