Car makers cannot make Euro6 targets

Post by papa_umau on Mon 05 Oct 2015, 11:23 am

With the VW Group emissions scandal in full swing, car makers ask EU regulators to lower NOx emissions targets for new cars.

The car industry has admitted that makers can’t meet 2020 diesel pollution targets and want to almost double Euro 6 limits under new tests, Auto Express understands.

Its been revealed by an EU insider that the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) is asking for a “conformity factor” of 1.7, whereby cars would be given Euro 6 status for emitting 0.136g/km of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from 2020.

It wouldn't be so bad if we were getting anything from the government for buying low emission cars, ( especially diesels ), but in the recent budget Osborne has removed the perks that buying a low emission car could once generate.

We used to have two or three levels of discounts off our VED charges ranging from no-charge for electric and hybrids up though £20 or £30 for emissions less that 100 kg-pkm, but now that these perks have been removed, all cars, even with low-emissions, now start at an automatic £140 VED charge and get heavier as they rise above these emissions levels.

This is to change from 2017.

I never saw that on until you highlighted it Paps.

That will virtually kill off the sales for low-emission cars, especially the diesels.

I notice that whenever we see an advert for any new car on the market they always show what the emission rates are for those under or over 100gk/m ( VED tax band A ), and this directs our eyes to tax levels under and over £30 a year.

Now they might as well not tell us about the tax-bands under 100gk/m as there will be no discount if everybody is going to pay a minimum £140.

    Talk about a rip-off ?

Yes Zath', and the thing is that very few people know about this action by the Chancellor, either that or they have forgotten it.

Here it is from The Mail online:

Road taxes on luxury cars and eco-friendly hybrids will be hiked under radical reforms to fund road-building schemes, George Osborne announced today.

At the moment a quarter of all cars are exempt from vehicle excise duty because of their low CO2 emissions.

But Mr Osborne said this meant middle class motorists with expensive cars were avoiding road tax while poor families stuck with polluting old models were paying hundreds of pounds a year.

The Chancellor announced a new system would come into force in 2017, which will see 95 per cent of new cars paying £140 a year - less than the average £166 paid today

However, cars worth more than £40,000 will be hit with an extra £310 'surcharge'.

It also means that only cars with zero carbon dioxide emissions will escape Vehicle Excise Duty - instead of the 100g/km threshold today.

Another of the reasons why I am going electric next year !

OK, I have just got an old diesel van, but I would love to know how many of the other car-makers are using the same or similar cheating devices ?

VW have already admitted that they will have to recall a few million European cars for a software change, and I believe that we will hear more on this from the other new car manufacturers.

There still may be compensation paid out by VW.

    Watch this space !
