US General "Britain should spend more".

US general urges Britain to spend more on armed forces

A senior US general has told the BBC it is imperative that Britain finds the money to spend on its armed forces, and that he is worried about the impact of recent defence cuts.

His comments come as the US carried out sea trials for a new state-of-the-art jump jet, which Britain is set to buy from the US. But the F-35 is already way over budget.

The full story from The BBC HERE

What a cheek this American General has to dictate to us how much money we should spend on defence. Evil or Very Mad

For many years we have been just another aircraft and ICBM missile carrier for America, but now, even with the cold war being over and done with, it seems that America still want to use us as their first line of defence.

I also find it a bit sick that America are about to sell us their latest vertical take off or landing, ( VTOL ), aircraft when it was us that first perfected this in the Harrier Jump Jet, and America bought it from us once we had developed it into the Sea Harrier, or ( SHAR ).

I have to ask....Where is our latest carrier-borne VTOL aircraft when we must have the greater amount of experience in this format of warplane, and why should we buy one from the Americans ?

Oh, that makes me livid with rage.

How dare this American general try to tell us how much we should spend on defence.

Mind you, I did think it was crazy that even although we were building two new aircraft carriers we did not have any planes to put on them. Suspect

Agreed, Zath, it seems rather strange and a lack of joined-up thinking on our part.

As to the General let's tell him to keep his beak out of our business!

    Well said both !

When the Tory-led government decided to build two new aircraft carriers they also decided that we needed new aircraft for them too, and after killing off the Sea Harriers and deciding that the Eurofighter, ( The Typhoon ), was unsuitable, they decided to buy expensive American warplanes that were suitable.

We may have to wait a few years before these American vertical take of and land ( VTOL ) or short takeoff or land, ( STOL ), warplanes are fully developed, and in the meantime the carriers are only good for helicopters.

These American F-35 jets are going to cost about 100 million each and so far only eight can be afforded out of the original 35 required.

HERE is a website that explains it in more detail.
