Energy overcharging to 1.2 billion pounds

Post by papa_umau on Wed 08 Jul 2015, 11:36 am

Millions of energy customers have been "paying too much for their energy bills", a year-long investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has found.

"Between 2009 and 2013, British Gas, E-On, Npower, EDF Energy, Scottish Power and SSE collectively charged households 1.2bn a year more than they would have in a competitive market", the CMA said.

The CMA has suggested several remedies.

One measure it is considering is a transitional price cap while reforms are made to the energy market.

A 10 Downing Street spokeswoman said: "The prime minister does not think that price regulation is the right approach."

HERE is the full story from the BBC.

Are we surprised that Cameron does not think that price regulation is the right way to go ?

I say that if the energy giants are not prepared to regulate themselves they must be forced to do the right thing.

    What do you say ?

I have always thought we were getting ripped-off by the energy giants, so it is good to see that fact in black and white.

Let's hope that the CMA now properly do the job they were created to do.

Don't hold your breath waiting for that Zath'.

Cameron and many Tories of the past have been keen on wage controls, but never interested in price controls.

Without both, inflation is going to grow again and we will be right back to where we were before the recent recession.

    Hi All,

I agree Paps, don't hold your breath Zath.

The one thing this country is good is provarication.

Whenever a crisis occurs we wring our hands and have an 'enquiry' where ' a lesson will be learned', or we take a knee jerk reaction as we have by buggering up the tourism in Tunisia. What we DONT do, unlike Iceland and other counties is weed out the individuals and purveyors of corporate greed who instigate these rip off's; put them on trial for fraud, and if guilty hand out an appropriate punishment. You can rest assured that the poor ruddy public who have been fleeced will not see a penny returned to them.

    Well said Technician.

Sadly that is all too true.

The great problem is that now it will take another five years to get rid of the self-engrandising Tories.

OK, I know that the others can be a pain at times also, but at least we know that we will get something less than more years of Fascism if we let other political parties have a chance at ruling us.

For some very strange reason we always get the Tories in Westminster even if we wipe them out of Scotland.

I guess it must be the English, the Welsh and the Northern Irish that keep putting these people back in, even if they should know better.

Cameron won't care. because we no longer own our Energy Companies. No profit in it for the Government.

Dead right HG, and after they have sold the banks back that they were forced to buy during the banking crisis more of our interests will be once again given to the privateers.

I just hope that they are stopped from selling the NHS to these dangerous people before they have finished their present five year term.

    It is certainly a worry.

My son and I were discussing what would happen to our counties if we left the EU. He couldn't understand that we can't unilaterally take back our industries and carry on as before.

He also didn't understand that as most of our food is imported via the Channel ports, we would be in rather dire straits within a short time.

He's idealistic and still rather naiive, unfortunately.

    And another thing.....

When the government continues to sell off the family silver they always sell it off dirt cheap.

They did it with the Royal Mail, and they are bound to do the same with the rescued banks if they get the chance.
