Another baby killed by a pet dog.

Post by papa_umau on Mon 22 Jun 2015, 1:02 pm

Maria Blacklin was already grieving when she arrived home to the horrific discovery of her three-week-old child dying on the floor.

Mum of baby Reggie was at her grandma's deathbed before the family dog killed the newborn tot.

I want to ask who was looking after the baby while the mother was away ?

IT seems that the mother's partner was in charge of the baby when it happened.

How did the dog - which is supposed to stay in an outdoor kennel - get into the house and into the baby's bedroom ?

Another tragic death of a child at the hands of family "pet" dogs !

What needs to be done in order to stop this from happening again ?

I am sick to the back teeth of people saying "he was a good dog and a loving family pet".

These are dogs for heavens sake and they will always be just a blink away from reverting to type.

They don't have to be Akitas or any thing like that as all of them are still wild animals at heart.

They are not doing anything wrong, they are just being faithful to their genetics.

They also whine on about how they will all become docile if they are trained properly, but I know for a fact. ( A professional dog-trainer used to live next door to me ), that they can all revert to type if they think for a second that they are stronger than any victim that they may be considering.

When we see children getting mauled by pet dogs we almost always find that the alpha male in that family, ( human or other dog ), was not present at the time of the attack.

It is not the dogs' fault as all they are answering to is their basic doggy instincts.

    Anybody ?

Oh my God, that's another heartbreaking story. Sad

Of course the dog can never be blamed in events like this as they are animals after all. It is ALWAYS the blame of the dog-owner if things like this happen.

Mind you some breeds are more liable to turn on anything they see that they think are weaker than they are. The more dangerous the breed the greater the chance that this will happen.

I would like to see owners jailed for such happenings as if they were, they might be more careful about the breeds they choose and how they train them.

I for one would love to see "status" dogs banned, as the brainless, ( usually), idiots that keeps such dogs only do so because they think they look hard when they pass by with it on a bit of string.

I am talking about the Staffie and Bulldog type crosses.

The regulations here definitely need tightening up.

    Anybody ?

There are dog breeds which are submissive and others which are dominators Akitas will dominate given half a chance as will huskies; yet even tiny dogs will become dominant aggressive if treated like children or if their socialisation and education has been neglected. Unfortunately, too many dogs are seen as 'fashionable', Staffies for instance, lovely friendly animals in the main, and the choice of people who like to look 'hard' as they resemble pit bulls.

Many dog breeds have recessive traits; pedigree bulldogs cannot give birth naturally because their hips are too small and the pups' heads are now too large for the birth canal. Many dogs which are bred to have the low rear end, such as German Shepherds and often Labradors and Retrievers, often have Hip dysplasia. Any dog in pain will be snappy. Some dogs are bred to Chase, such as Greyhounds, Salukis, Afghans, Borzois and whippets. Terriers are bred to kill rats and other vermin, and a small child may trigger those instincts.

The worst thing to happen to the Wolf was when Humans started domesticating them.

My son has been bitten several times, and entirely his own fault in every case!

Thanks very much for that "expert" knowledge HG.

I do have to question about some being more "dominant" than others.

Although there is no doubt that the bigger breeds, and the half-breeds that come directly from hunting dogs are the ones that have to be kept a special eye on, I have always believed that no dog should ever be left alone in the company of a baby as any dog will see a baby as someone or some-thing to dominate and to attack.

I agree that animals should never be allowed to be unsupervised around children. I also believe that all dogs out in a public place should wear a muzzle, whatever their size. Even the little ones can be dangerous.

    UPDATE....

Post by papa_umau on Sun 19 Jul 2015, 11:48 am

A couple of days ago three family members, including two children, were mauled by their pet BOXER dog.

To quieten the dog someone had to suffocate it.

Boxer dogs have never been given a bad name for such attacks but this just goes to prove that just about any dog will attack if it feels it can get away with it.
