Azerbaijan on the map for the wrong reasons.

Post by papa_umau on Sun 14 Jun 2015, 12:52 pm

    The European games, just started.

Azerbaijan bans The Guardian from reporting on Baku European Games.
    • Government denies Guardian journalist entry to country.
    • Other media outlets and human rights activists also banned.
    • ‘Repression making Games historic for wrong reasons’ – Human Rights Watch.

The government of Azerbaijan has banned the Guardian, along with a number of media outlets and human rights activists, from entering the country to cover the inaugural European Games which begin on Friday.

The games will feature more than 6,000 athletes from 50 countries, and the autocratic government of the president, Ilham Aliyev, has poured billions into the event, keen to put Azerbaijan on the map. The British Olympic Association has sent a team of 160 athletes to Baku, with the Olympic gold medallist Nicola Adams being the flagbearer at Friday’s opening ceremony.

Well folks, there you have it.

It seems that ex-Eastern Bloc countries simply cannot stop acting like Soviet satellites.

What do you people think of this ?

If they were doing this to try to stop adverse publicity they have achieved the exact opposite.

Shades of Eastern block repression if I ever saw it.

The president, or should I say dictator, that rules Azerbaijan wants to find out how the West does things if he really wants to raise his country out of the Eastern bloc type of recession.

The BBC said recently that Azerbaijan became a member of the Council of Europe in 2001. Often accused of rampant corruption and election-rigging, ruling circles walk a tightrope between Russian and Western regional geo-strategic interests.

They are not yet full members of the EU and if they continue to repress Western freedoms they never will be.

One thing that gives them a great position in negotiations is the fact that the country has many oil and gas reserves and they are - so far - prepared to send both to Western Europe.

Yes, a particular interest of mine. Wink

    Yes, again well spoken Angie.

We always find that if any second or third world country has large reserves of oil and gas they are either made friends of by the West or attacked, as Iraq was.
