How much are lawyers really paid ?

Post by zathrus on Thu 23 Apr 2015, 12:11 pm

How a lawyer's salary surges once it reaches 100,000
Chart: Wages start high and rise sharply with experience, especially for those with a Cambridge degree.

By Nicole Blackmore of The Telegraph.

Law graduates can expect to earn 54,000 when they walk into their first job and most will see their pay rise by a staggering 25,000 every five years.

This starting salary is double the national average wage of around 27,000.

A study of 400 UK lawyers found that on average the job pays 54,000 for the first five years, rising to 76,000 for those with five to 10 years of experience. Lawyers who have been practising for between 10 and 15 years can expect to earn 100,000, while those with more than 15 years can command 181,000 a year.

Good posting Zathrus, and definitely a shocker.

The authorities are trying to reduce the standard payments for legal aid but the solicitors are putting up a hard fight.

It is the high levels of legal aid that is making defence costs unrealistic and which is driving up the final cost to the taxpayer.

It always seems to be the case that people who get legal aid are the ones that don't work.

I will not go into the details, but once I needed legal aid to fight a wrong prosecution but as I was working and earning I did not qualify for legal aid. Luckily I was found not guilty and awarded costs because the judge was a sensible one.

Yes, the working people and the middle classes can never get recourse to justice as they invariably cannot claim legal aid

This is one of the great weaknesses in the British legal aid system.
