Burger bars, pubs, bookies and food-banks.

Not sure if the same situation applies round the country, but here in Manchester we seem to be getting swamped in burger restaurants. As well as pubs offering them, within 100 yards of each other we have a Five Guys, a Gourmet Burger Kitchen, a Handmade Burger Co, and a Bread Meats Bread. There's also a Burger Meats Bun round the corner, and another couple further up the street.

On each side of each burger bar we are now finding either a bookies, a pub, or a food bank.

    What's become of the British high-street ?

Either we have too much money and we get fatter and fatter in burger bars or/and we get drunk in pubs and go to the bookies to spend what's left.

Of course, this lifestyle can also find us finishing up in the food bank next door too.

    Anybody ?

I don't know about all those burger bars, as the only ones I know are MacDonalds and Burgerking.

Mind you, it is true that the high-street is now full of all kinds of fast food joints as well as bookies, charity shops, pubs, and food-banks.

How things have changed; and not always for the better.

    Too true mate.

The high street is now deliberately appealing to the bottom-end of the market.

What I find strange is how and why the poorest people still find enough money to go to the bookies, the bingo and the pubs.

Can anybody explain that one to me ?

While I agree that you are right there Zathrus, when I hear this I always respond my saying that the people who have very little still like to try to look as if they have enough to get by on.

That is why they often do gamble, smoke, and drink too much.

Sadly, it's all part and parcel of being at the bottom end of society.
