    Antibiotic resistance: 80,000 'might die'.

Post by papa_umau on Mon 06 Apr 2015, 12:37 pm

About 80,000 people could die if there were a "widespread outbreak" of an antibiotic-resistant blood infection, according to a government document.

The National Risk Register of Civil Emergencies says such an outbreak could be expected to hit 200,000 people - and two in five of them "might die".

The document also says "high numbers of deaths could also be expected" from other forms of resistant infection.

It warns infection risk could make "much of modern medicine unsafe".

This frightening report says that if something is not done soon medicine in the modern world might be taken back into the "dark-ages"

What do you good folk thinks of this disturbing news ?

They have known about this for many years and yet very little is being done about it.

They will start to do something after the horse is out of it's stable and running up the field. Twisted Evil

There are a number of new antibiotics coming on stream soon, and the quicker the better I think.

Here's a news item from The New Scientist magazine

New antibotics could work for 30 years

    That's an interesting site Papa.

I too hope that these new antibiotics work as well as the old ones did as without the old ones working there is going to be a lot of people dying from simple infections.

In the years before Penicillin was discovered the deaths from all kinds of wounds were horrendous.

The thing is Angie; the folk that have allowed the misuse of antibiotics in animal husbandry and over-prescribing have known what they are doing for years.

It is them to blame if the deadly diseases that current antibiotics are used for become resistant or even useless.

    Update on topic.....

Post by papa_umau on Sun 26 Apr 2015, 1:37 pm

Following the thread-story about the risk of many of the new superbugs being resistant to present day antibiotics I thought I might just mention the latest one:

The private hospital where Princess Kate had her baby "George" has been forced to shut a surgical unit and ward because eight patients had been infected with the superbug "Carbapenemase, producing enterobacteriaceae" ( CPE ). This is a strand of the CRE superbug that is just one more resistant to powerful antibiotics.

Princess Kate is expected to move back into the hospital for the birth of her second child.
