    Tesco/Coca Cola/Schweppes row.

Tesco removes Schweppes from shelves in row with Coca-Cola

Schweppes removed from Tesco stores as retailer and Coca-Cola clash.

Britain’s biggest retailer has pulled 25 lines of the soft drink from its shelves after clashing with Coca-Cola Enterprises, which produces Schweppes, the tonic water and ginger ale brand.

Tesco is looking to renegotiate deals with suppliers and cut the price it pays for products.

The company has told suppliers that falling commodity prices mean it should be able to offer lower prices to consumers.

The whole story from The Telegraph HERE

I guess that the consumers will not be all that bothered about this spat so long as it does not finish up with higher prices.

    What say you ?

While the big supermarkets definitely have too much buying power, and they misuse this power, ( look at how they are hammering the milk producers with payment for milk so low that the farmers cannot afford to keep dairies ).

I do guess that as long as the prices to us are kept down to a reasonable level via competition we will still be able to buy our food etc' at fair prices.

Of course cheap prices to the wholesalers and the producers does not always guarantee low prices for us.

    Dead right Zath'.

Before we get cheap retail prices at the supermarkets they first have to decide how much profit they are going to take before they set these prices.

For instance, At Aldi I can buy two litres of semi-skimmed fresh milk at 89p

I was offered doorstep delivery of 2 litres of fresh milk from McQueens Dairies, ( central Scotland ), for the price of £1.99 each.

That virtually works out at £1.00 a litre.

Sadly I couldn't give them the order as one pound a litre was just too expensive for me.

    Anybody ?

I find it very disturbing that the buying-power of the big supermarkets can rip-off their suppliers and wholesalers in order to give us low prices over the counter.

And, it is true that the difference between what they pay their suppliers for the goods and the price we pay at the tills is not anything like the same.

Somebody is making big money somewhere at the behest of the producers and the end users.

This is just not right and the government of the day should ensure that we get good prices via genuine competition and the producers and wholesalers get a fair price for their wares too.

It is time that this unbridled power of the big supermarkets was curtialed.
