    The latest on Smart Meters.......

Post by papa_umau on Mon 09 Mar 2015, 12:00 pm

Smart meters may not be delivered to UK homes on time, MPs warn

Delays to government’s flagship energy scheme to supply smart meters to 30m UK households and small businesses by 2020, enabling them to cut bills, could lead to it being a ‘costly failure’

Smart meters that would enable people to see their own energy use in real-time will not be delivered on time on current form, depriving households of a cheap and easy way of cutting down on their energy bills, an influential group of MPs has warned.

As a result, the government-sponsored scheme to supply them risks being a “costly failure”, according to the energy and climate change committee.

I am with Scottish Gas, and because I had great difficulty getting my bills from the last provider to be accurate I left The Hydro-board.

About six months ago I was offered a smart meter from the parent company, British Gas, but I am still waiting for it to be installed.

To ensure that all of my bills were correct I started to send in monthly readings from the dual-fuel meters from both services. While this was not hard, I had to remember to send in these readings at the same time each-month.

I do not see why I should put myself to such inconvenience just to ensure that my meters are read when it is THEIR responsibility to do this.

The smart-meters would have solved this problem, but now this scheme seems to be up in the air and may not even get delivered on time.

    Anybody ?

Yes, it is beginning to look as if this scheme has collapsed if none of the other companies are taking advantage of the government incentives for installing smart-meters.

As far as I am concerned, this would be just another spy in the home and for that reason I wouldn't give it house-room at all.

If I ever get the promised smart-meter from British Gas I was hoping that I would then not have to send in self-done monthly readings any more.

I guess we are just going to have to wait and see what happens here ?

The energy companies should be reading their own meters, like they used to do, so that they get the guaranteed correct reading and they then send out accurate bills.

Of course they do not want to pay for meter-readers to do this and that is why they want us to send in the readings, or they just keep sending estimated bills.

The government-subsidised installation of smart-meters would solve all of these problems.

I have no clue about what the problems are here.

Basicially, the technology is crap and the government subsidy is very poor too.

Plus it is another piece of spying technology to snoop on ,and eventually control, your energy use.

Remember this: when you get a letter in saying we are coming to install a smart meter you do not need to agree, there is no legal requirement to have one. Just phone/email and tell them you don't want it.

Yes, just like the use of loyalty cards and when internet "bots" survey your work online this IS just another way to gather marketing information on you.

It is also another way of getting income for the information-gatherers, as they sell on this information to other companies.

There is a ground-swell of public opinion that is putting pressure on the government to stop this info'-gathering without the person's specific permission.

Thanks for the "Stop smart meters" link Rider as it was very interesting to read.

What has been said in that site has changed my mind over smart meters.

    Now I wouldn't give them house-room.

I think it's a wise choice to be very sceptical about these things. They are always sold to you with an unproven benefit, which is usually money-saving. People always respond where money is involved, and especially when they are going to save. However as you have just seen for yourself the true story is often craftily disguised to sway you into wanting one or going along with the mantra. The evidence from other places using these things is that people are paying more, and are being penalised for using more energy, and the ultimate outcome will be to control (remotely) your use of energy, just in case you use too much. That's why they need these things installed, they install all the infrastructure first then say oh look as if by magic we have all the technology set up, all we need to do is implement it.

As far as I am concerned, if all they do is to remove the need to send in our own readings then that would be fine. Obviously that is not all they are going to do, so I too am against them on principle.

I too read the "stop-smart-meters" link. "Rider".

( BTW, how do you like the new name that Angie has given you Suspect )

Great idea "Rider", so long as the name is not a nasty one.

Our Angie baby has to expect that if she arbitrarily chooses a name for someone else.
