Net migration up to 298,000 as Conservative target missed

Net migration to the UK has risen to 298,000, according to the final set of figures before the election.

The numbers, for the year ending in September 2014, is now well above the level of migration when David Cameron came to power in 2010.

The Tories, who had hoped to get it to below 100,000, said the figures were "disappointing" and blamed a rise in EU migration - and Lib Dem "constraints".

Labour said Mr Cameron's "grand promises" were "now in tatters".

More ammunition for UKIP, might I suggest. Twisted Evil

Thanks for that Zathrus. You are certainly on the ball here, as that just appeared in yesterdays evening news.

Another fine nail in Cameron's coffin I think.

Farage must be wringing his hands with pleasure over this one.

What a smack in the face for Cameron and his Tory anti-immigration hard-liners. ( That is if they haven't already jumped ship to UKIP of course Twisted Evil ).

These immigration and EU subjects are probably what are going to lead to the Tories being split right down the middle again.

It always seems strange to me that even although the Tories push themselves forward as the supporters of business in Britain it seems that the great majority of British businesses do not want to come out of Europe as they send most of their exports there.

I don't think that Cameron or Osborne are ever going to square that particular circle, do you ?

    An excellent point Angie.

It is true that while the Tories try to be the government of the business-man they fail miserably in this task when they call for Britain to pull out of Europe.

This is what might be called one magnificent cleft-stick.
