The church of England has a duty to debate politics

Post by papa_umau on Tue 17 Feb 2015, 1:37 pm

The Church of England "has a right and a duty" to speak in the political debate ahead of May's general election, Church leaders say.

In a letter to congregations, the House of Bishops has called for a "fresh moral vision" by politicians.

It says it does not endorse a political party but urges parishioners to vote and calls for debate on issues such as nuclear defence and the economy.

The full story on this from The BBC HERE

As I see it the church, ANY church, has no right whatsoever to interfere with politics, as that is not in their remit.

In my opinion, religion has been a lead weight round the neck of politics in Britain since the dark ages.

If they want to keep interfering in politics then let them create a party that we can either deny or support.

How do YOU feel about religion interfering in secular matters ?

I say let them "debate" it amongst themselves as much as they want, but don't allow them to use their power and influence to change what happens naturally in our democratic processes.

As the Americans might say: "Keep church and state totally separate".

Yes, and even although the American constitution DOES say this, in fact the religious lobbies, especially in the Southern states, have great power over what goes on in the House of Representatives and The Senate.

One good thing about Britain as that most of our churches are not as extremist as many of the American Southern states churches are.

One exception to that is the Jehadi spin-off here from the mostly peaceful and reasonable Muslim religion.

May your God help us all if they ever get to have any influence in our democratic processes.

    Yes, and I agree.

It is called Sharia Law and the likes of ISIL are planning to introduce it everywhere they gain control.

It already holds sway in Iran but I hope that it does not spread any further, as it denies women a say in anything of importance and it denies just about all of the freedoms that we have come to expect as the norm.

Yes, and just wait until those three silly young girls get into the ranks of the Islamic State as then they will instantly know what Sharia law does for them.

They have been taking the freedoms of Britain for granted and they are now going to lose all of them.

I only wish the authorities could have grabbed them BEFORE they put themselves at risk in Syria.

Sorry for changing the subject a bit.

Dead right HG. Evil or Very Mad

The problem is that even in this so-called "free" world the religions still have too much power over the democratic systems.

The Americans wrote this law into their constitution, ( that religion and state shall never mix ), but even there we see very rich and strong religious groups applying pressure in both houses of the American government.
