    Time to invest in a dash-cam ?

Post by papa_umau on Mon 02 Feb 2015, 12:11 pm

With insurance fraud on the increase, an onboard video could prove who’s to blame in an accident – and lower your premiums.

( Dashboard cameras – commonly know as “dashcams” – are wired into your car and they automatically turn on and start recording when the car is started. They come with built-in memory and record on a continuous loop, ensuring that you never miss an accident ).

These gadgets were once only found in countries where unscrupulous driving practices are a more regular occurrence. But with car insurance scams becoming more prevalent on UK roads, a growing number of motorists are using such devices to protect themselves from fraudsters. In fact, figures from market research company GFK show that dashcam sales have increased by 918% over the last 12 months.

The big driver behind this has been “crash for cash” scams. These can take many forms, from fraudsters disabling their own brake lights or “flashing” drivers to let them out of junctions before crashing into them, through to staged accidents and false witnesses. But whatever the form, it is costing motorists and the industry dear.

The full story from The Guardian HERE

I know no-one needs any extra expense in these days of increased expense and government austerity programs, but it might just be a good idea to invest in one of these little bits of kit if you drive a lot.

    What say you ?

I agree that these cheap bits of kit are now becoming essential to come to our defence in accidents.

I plan to put one in my van tomorrow.

While on the subject: Did any of you see that shocking bit of footage that was taken by two dash-cams as that Trans-Asia turbo-prop plane crashed right over the motorway and into the nearby river.

What a shocker that one was ! cyclops

    It certainly was Zath'.

What surprised me was the clarity of that video which came from those two dash-cams.

I think I will go an have a look at these bits of kit too.

Anybody got any input about this ?

I saw one today in the Brightlife sale catalogue. ( half price ).

    Find it online here: www.brightlife.co

Enter the promo-code 11502 and you will be taken to the HALF PRICE page.

The "dash-cam" was £60.00 but with the code it is £30.00

    Worth a look, I think.

Thanks for that advice Angie. I have one of those dash-cams on order after your "half-price" info.

Here is a picture of it from the catalogue:

I will give a review on it once I have it installed.

Dashcams are vital to prove the truth of an accident; cam I also make a plea for having a tracker installed? You have much more chance of getting your car back, hopefully still in driveable condition. Immobilisers are also a good idea.

All good stuff HG, but every time we add something like this we are making the cost of motoring more expensive.

The dash-cam is cheap and easy to install.

The tracker is expensive to install, ( hide from the scroats ), and the best ones have live tracking running all the time secured by a third-party company. ( Also expensive ).

In America they call this a "LoJack" but I do not know if such a system is available in Britain.

Most modern cars have both immobilisers and dead-locking installed as standard, but they are VERY expensive to add to an older car.

Tracker are available in the UK; for those with cherished vehicles (such s VW campers) or classic cars, they are a must. I recommend them for Motabilty vehicles too, adapted vehicles are stolen just as often as regular ones. they help with Insurance costs too.

    Thanks for that HG.

I - and the rest of the ROBsters - would appreciate if you could possibly give us any more information on these British trackers.

    1 ). Are they expensive.

2 ). Are they easy to install.

3 ). Are they easy to apply as an owner-operated tracker.

Sorry, don't have any info on the cost of them myself; as I no longer drive, but I used to be a VW camper owner and they are often stolen. I will try to find out approximate costs and get back to you.

Your last entry prompted me to look in my new car handbook and "bingo" it has already got a Citroen automatic theft tracker built in.

If the car is pinched a call to Citroen UK will quickly find out where it is. Good eh ?

I have had the car for two years, but I did not know that about it until I looked it up yesterday.
