    Very strange grounding in Solent.

Post by zathrus on Sun 04 Jan 2015, 1:28 pm

A car-transporter ship ran aground on a very well known sand-bank at the mouth of the Solent and investigators are puzzled as to why this well known sandbank trapped this modern ship

Here's the full story from Sky News: http://news.sky.com/story/1401706/salvage-mission-after-car-carrier-runs-aground

Here's a photo of it sitting at 45 degrees at low tide:

Maybe the skipper was drunk or something ?

    Nice picture Zath'.

I believe the reason that the vessel was DELIBERATELY beached on the sand-bank was that in deep waters the car-carrier had started to list and the only way that the captain of the ship could avoid it turning turtle was to deliberately put it aground on the sand-bank.

No doubt we will find out more during the salvage operations.

Also strangely, after all of the efforts of the salvage teams the ship re-floated itself on a high tide.

More information still to come on this one I think.

I was reading in the Sunday papers that a salvage firm have pumped water out of this ship so that it can be righted properly.

Once that is done the ship could be towed to and tied up to a quay and the high-end vehicles that are on it could be offloaded.

Then they are going to have to discover why it started to list in the first place.

That's interesting Angie. I thought that might have been seen in the BBC news last night, but it wasn't.

After a search I have found a BBC-England news-report telling us of this.

It seems that it will take some time to get the counter-balancing water out of the ship without also pumping out the tons of oil that have spilled from the vehicles on-board.
