    "Reckless" antibiotic prescribing.

Post by papa_umau on Mon 22 Sep 2014, 11:17 am

'Reckless' antibiotic prescribing fuelling superbugs as some GPs prescribing twice as much as others.

Former health minister condemns 'reckless antibiotic prescribing' for fuelling superbugs as Telegraph finds some GPs are prescribing twice as much as others.

GPs in some areas of England are prescribing more antibiotics per 100,000 people than others, an investigation by the Daily Telegraph has found.

I have always found it amazing how very intelligent and supremely well-educated doctors - who already know about the risk of the over-prescribing of antibiotics - keep on doing it simply because they are being bullied into it by their patients.

I suspect that this is just another way for them to get each patient out of their consulting room so that they can get through the backlog of people sitting in the waiting room.

    Comments please.

We have known about this for many years and it is only now, when the antibiotics that we do have are starting to fail badly, that things are getting done.

I was reading today that only 14% of everyday bacterial infections are now responding to antibiotics.

In fact now that we have the superbugs, like:

    Acinetobacter Baumannii

    Clostridium Difficile

    CRKP

    E.coli

    ESBL

    MRSA

    NDM-1

    Norovirus

    Pseudomonas Aeruginosa

    Streptococcus

    and

    VRE

We are seeing considerably more people succumbing to these infections that were once cured by the powerful antibiotics that we have available today.

This is not just scary, but it is wrong, and it should be fixed by new laws post-haste.

    That's a shocking list Papa.

I had no clue that there were so many such "superbugs" waiting to infect us.

I can tell you, all of the other GPs should be like my doctor as he is very severely down on the other people in the practice that prescribe antibiotics for anything other than bacterial infections.

They should all be like that, but some of them give in too easily to the patients that push for antibiotics when they don't need them.

I think this is all about trying to get as many people through the surgery as they can, in the time provided.

Anybody will take the easy way out when they are forced to, and doctors are not exempt from this pressure.
