    The Great British Bake-off.....Dangerous ?

Asthma alert for Bake Off fans: Popularity of BBC show 'could be putting home bakers at risk of developing condition from flour dust'

The Great British Bake Off may be putting home bakers at risk, warn experts.

Around 3,000 people - many bakers - develop occupational asthma each year.

Study has identified flour as being the main cause of the condition in France.

It can lead to severe chronic asthma if exposure to the sensitiser continues.

Well folks, what do you think of that idea then ?

Never thought of it like that.

But surely this will not be the case if it is just a bit of baking done at home.

Of course if it is done on an industrial scale there will be more flour flying about, but in that case I would think that the health and safety rules would mean that protection would have to be worn.

Asthmatics are at risk wherever and whenever they go into areas of contaminated air and I am sure that they will be careful when they are chucking flour about.

I doubt very much if doing a bit off baking will make you into an asthmatic if you are not already one.

Easy solution? Use a dust mask, available from bigger DIY stores. As a lifelong asthma sufferer and a hobby baker I use them both for housework and baking.

    Hi again HG.

That is good advice for people like yourself who are already asthmatics.

Having said that I am sure that most asthmatics will be aware of the risk associated with home baking.

I very much doubt if baking at home will make you into one though. I don't really know.

Maybe, as a nurse, you can advise us about that one too ?

I have the feeling that the Daily Fail are scaremongering again, they love doing articles like this.

Unfortunately. asthma is a strange beast, different folks have different triggers, rather like hay fever.

Some folk start in February with Hazel pollen, others not until the Autumn with the Fungus spores, along with the majority who are affected by the grass pollens of summer

The trick in my case was to identify what triggers my asthma, and find ways to avoid inhaling them. It's a case of managing the symptoms to reduce the chances of attack.

Unfortunately with baking, if there is insufficient air filtration, there is more chance of becoming sensitised to the flour, resulting eventually with Chronic Asthma or even COPD* and Emphysema.

Miner's Lung and Farmer's Lung are two other Industrial diseases which have similar effects in the long term.

*COPD stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

    Cheers, HG

Wow, that's a bit scary HG.

It's a good job the "Daily Fail" don't have you writing their copy for them.

I guess that it all boils down to what we are sensitised to as far as our auto-immune system is concerned.

I would suspect that the greatest number of people - who are not at risk of becoming asthmatic, if they are not already asthmatics - would be Ok if they took up baking as a result of the "Great British Bake-off" programme.

Those that ARE at risk will already know what to do or what not to do to avoid getting an attack.

Anyways, thank you very much for the benefit of your wisdom in this subject.
