Can we judge character at a glance ?

Post by papa_umau on Tue 29 Jul 2014, 12:13 pm

It takes only a brief glance to assess others and to decide if they are beautiful or trustworthy, a study has found.

Eyes are judged as an instant indicator of youthful attractiveness, while being tanned is linked to masculinity, according to Dr Tom Hartley and colleagues at the University of York.

For the study, they took the features of 1,000 faces then asked people to judge them for various social traits.

Well folks, do YOU agree with this, or do you think that it takes longer to estimate a stranger's plausibility ?

Being a business-man for many years I have to say that it is not always easy to measure up any stranger just by using first impressions and by looking at their faces.

In fact any person that even tries to do that would put themselves at great risk of being conned by expert tricksters.

Person-to-person assessment of someone's character is a much more complicated exercise than that.

    Well, that's MHO anyway.

    Dead right Zathrus.

While it is very easy to see and measure beauty at a glance I also think that trying to see any depth into a person's character by a glance at their face is just not not possible.

In other words, I think that these so-called "scientists" have got it badly wrong this time.

    Anybody ?

Now that's an interesting hypothesis.Twisted EvilSuspect

I do think that some people are better at reading faces than others are and that this cannot be interpreted as anything that is measurable.

Of course, as was famously said by someone: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and therefore what might be seen as beautiful to one person might be seen as downright ugly to another.

To suggest that one can interpret another person's character by looking at their face, is just downright nonsense to me.

Yes, first impressions can often be misleading and before we can really find out about a person's character we have to spend time getting to know them.

I am surprised that these so-called "scientists" did not come to this conclusion too.
