    Children and veggies.

Post by Angie baby on Sat 31 May 2014, 1:02 pm

Being a teacher who often supervises the school lunch period in my primary school I have witness how some children who will just not put vegetables in their mouths and yet some, who are obviously used to them seem to like them a lot.

What is going on here, I wonder.

While researching this phenomenon I found an article from ITV News that seems to answer my question.

Have a look at this and see what you think: http://www.itv.com/news/story/2014-05-31/children-can-learn-to-love-vegetables-study-shows/

I have found that not only do children who come from poor homes are just not in the habit of eating vegetables, but by the time they come to us they have made their minds up about the whole idea.

Children from better off - and often from more intelligent parents - seem much more willing to eat vegetables when they are offered to them.

How do you guys feel about this one ?

Excellent point Angie, as I too had problems getting my bairns to eat their veggies. All I achieved is that my son is a strict carnivore, like me, and my daughter is a full vegetarian now.

Even the wife is leaning that way as well.

It is hard work to try to introduce pre-school kids to the eating of vegetables and I do not think that it is nearly as easy as that "expert" seems to think it is.

Never had trouble with my kids; if they didn't eat what was served they went without. They won't go hungry long.

A GREAT, if a bit old fashioned way to do it ! Twisted Evil

Some of the olden days ways are still the best ways even with all of the expertise we now have in medical science.

I AM old,Twisted Evil, Rationing was still in force when I was little, and I wasn't given the opporunity to be picky, bringing my two up on Widow's Pension wasn't dissimilar to post-war conditions, so I applied what was applied to me. It worked, and my son, who is my carer, is even more adventurous with food than I am!

I guess that the new generation of kids are just too fussy.

We really should stick with the encouragement of kids to eat vegetables but many of us just take the easy way out and give in to them.

So true Papa. Children have a power that is so strong that adults have to revert to violence if they want them to do what they are told.

Obviously this idea is just not on and normal persuasion just does not work with strong-willed children.

The most important influence with children and young people is fashion and the power of their peers and maybe this is the road we should be going down ?

    Yes Angie, maybe it is.

Either that or ensure that all of the children go back to the bad old days of rationing, when starvation was much closer than it is today.

Thanks very much folks for your comments on my thread about kids and their veggies.

Mind you I don't think this is a subject that is going to be solved here.
