Should all shops open on a Sunday ?

Post by papa_umau on Wed 09 Apr 2014, 11:05 am

Give the people what they want - the ability to shop all day, every day.

"Abolishing Sunday trading laws in today's 24/7 digital world is a no-brainer for the Coalition" says Allister Heath of The Telegraph.

"It’s time for the Coalition to allow consenting adults to shop freely on Sundays. It is ridiculous, at a time of 24/7 online shopping and late-night weekend home deliveries, that the state still restricts the opening hours of all but the smallest of stores in most of the UK.

Ending the unpleasant absurdity that is Sunday chucking-out time in our supermarkets and shopping centres is a policy that ought to tick all the right boxes for the Coalition. It would be hugely popular across all demographic groups, could be implemented quickly and would create tens of thousands of jobs, including in the more depressed regions. It would also do wonders for the Government’s image: shopping, loved by millions but hated by snobs, would no longer be officially discouraged."

Well folks, do you think that the shops should all stay open on a Sunday, or not ?

Yes, of course the shops should stay open on Sundays so long as the people who work in them get multiple hourly rates for doing so.

We have to remember that most people that need to shop work five or six days a week and this restricts the time that they have for shopping. Sunday is now becoming the day of choice for such shoppers.

I do not think that nearly so many people as used to now consider Sundays to be a religious day of rest.

This Sunday-closing thing is a Christian religion concept and like all things religious these days it too is getting a hammering from the Secularists.

Being a secularist myself I have always thought that specific religions should have no power over secular matters and shopping on a Sunday is one of those secular matters that the greatest majority of the British public now conform to.

    Anybody disagree ?

Religion is exerting less and less influence on matters like this as day-to-day life seldom includes any religious tenets any more.

The massive losses to the church congregations and the numbers of churches that are closing and being turned into flats, discos, pubs and casinos highlights this very well I think.

    As usual, dead right Angie.

The things is that what this trend does is to ensure that many of the people that are left in the world's religions now come from the extremist end of these theisms.

Zealots in religion just like zealots in anything else always narrow the way that these views present themselves to the world.

What bugs me about the Sunday opening, is the attitude of the Bus companies, who, in many areas do not work Sundays, or after about 8pm weekdays.

With the main attitudes of the population being pro-seven-day trading, it seems the buses are letting the side down badly. They could make far more money working Sundays and late evenings than not. Folk could get to evening and weekend events without having to pay high taxi rates.

    Hi HG....

Something tells me that this is the bus companies fault and not the drivers' fault as the bus companies do not want to pay multiple rates for drivers working on a Sunday.

From my experience of workers many of them will be prepared to work any number of extra hours required so long as they get double-time for Sundays and time-and-a-half for Saturdays.

    UPDATE.....

Post by papa_umau on Sat 19 Apr 2014, 12:35 pm

I noted that a number of racetracks were open on Good Friday also.

Traditionally there has been no racing on Good Fridays for religious reasons, but now we are seeing the grip of the religions on our secular life being loosened as the days go by.

I have to say that this is a good thing, as in the multicultural and multi-religious society, we have in Britain today, one single religion should hold no sway over such secular matters.

    Anybody ?
