Government laws on "ripping" from CDs etc'

UK government to legalise DVD and CD 'ripping'

The copying of CDs and DVDs for personal use will be legalised as part of an attempt to bring UK copyright law up to date for the digital age.

The UK Intellectual Property Office ( IPO ) has announced plans to make the practice of 'ripping' content from CDs and DVDs legal, as part of changes designed to bring UK copyright law up to date for the digital age.

It is currently illegal to copy content that you have bought on a CD onto your MP3 player. The changes will update copyright law to make this legal, as long as you own what you are copying, and the copy you make is for your own private use.

The changes will also mean that you will be able to copy a book or film you have purchased for one device onto another without infringing copyright.

At last, a bit of common sense from government. After all, it has to be impossible to enforce the copyright laws as they stand at the moment when people do this in the comfort of their own homes.

    Comments please.

That post made me smile, as people have already been downloading from pirate-ripping sites for years and copying what they ripped.

I have never heard of any of the downloaders being done for this even if a few of the pirate sites have been shut down and prosecuted.

"Owt-fer-nowt" is a good Northern saying and so long as the copyright cops cannot get into our homes without a warrant this will continue.

I am even sure that the reason they have changed these laws is totally because they were un-enforceable anyway.

You might be right about that Zath'.

Ripping and copying HAS been going on for a very long time and the authorities have no clue about how to stop it going on in the privacy of our homes.

Mind you, if we stop paying for our downloads and we stop buying the CDs and DVDs there will be no incentive for the creators to create any more.
