    Serious "bedroom tax" blunder.

Post by papa_umau on Mon 27 Jan 2014, 12:48 pm

After a serious legal cockup it was released today that more than 10,000 families in Scotland alone have been wrongly charged bedroom tax.

A wrongly read piece of legislation that says that anyone who has been a tenant in the same home since 1996, and has been getting housing benefit since then, are EXEMPT from the bedroom tax charge.

After all of the 32 local councils in Scotland were questioned about this, of 20 that responded, only 7 gave concrete figures.

With extrapolations made from the councils that responded, an average has been worked out that states that around 3.5 million has been wrongly taken from the people who qualify for this exemption.

This means that every family that have been wrongly charged for having an extra room will get back a rebate of around 350.

Councils have had to divert staff to sift back 19 years in order to find out who have been caught in this mistake.

This flaw was found by campaigners who looked into the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit ( Consequential Provisions ) Regulations 2006.

If this is what is happening in Scotland alone, I wonder if this also effects the people living in England N/Ireland and Wales ?

Aye, that's certainly a nasty one.

I read today that when Cameron was asked if this mistake effected any families outside of Scotland, he poo-pooed the idea.

I think that this one needs further examination right across the country.
