Vote Yes or watch Labour lurch to right.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 21 Jan 2014, 11:52 am

As  this is mostly a Scottish subject I have inserted this post in the Off Topic sub-forum.

Being a queer fish that is both a Scottish Nationalist and a Labour man I have often been caught between a rock and a hard place as far as voting with my conscience goes.

After watching what happened to Labour when Blair and a few other centre-right people in the Labour party dragged this workers party most of the way over to the right with New-Labour, I now worry that it might happen again and that is mostly why I plan to vote Yes in the Scottish referendum in September.

Scotland used to deliver a massive majority for Labour but now that Labour has been defeated by the SNP in Scotland the Labour party is only a shell of what it used to be up here. I blame Tony Blair for this.

Now an eminent academician has virtually spoken out about these worries of mine and he is telling people that even although he is English and a Labour man from way back he is now going to vote Yes for Scottish independence.

    Headline:

Scottish independence: Leading academic explains why he would rather risk going it alone than see Labour lurch to the right

DAVID Donnison, Glasgow University's professor emeritus in Urban Studies and member of the Labour Party for 67 years, says he is worried that his party is too concerned with attracting middle England votes.

    Opinions please.

You are just going to have to go with your conscience as far as that is concerned, but even if that is a choice where you live Paps, it is not an option for me.

Any-way, I don't think that the Tories have a hope in hell of being re-elected and beating Labour to power in England next year.

Even in Scotland I don't think that the Labour party is EVER going to lurch to the right again as the last time it did with Blair it got a really bad name for itself.

I have already said that even if the SNP do manage to get independence for Scotland I cannot see Scotland staying in control of the SNP afterwards as the core of Scotland is Labour party driven.

I expect that politics in Scotland will polarise into left and right again once independence has been granted.
