Highways Agency to cut speeds to 60 MPH.

Post by papa_umau on Tue 07 Jan 2014, 12:21 pm

Proposals to cut the motorway speed limit in some areas to 60mph will harm the economy, motoring groups have warned.

The Highways Agency has announced that it is planning to reduce the limit on a 32-mile stretch of the M1, amid fears that pollution levels are damaging the health of nearby residents. The proposals are part of an attempt to meet European Union targets for clean air.

Well folks, what do you think of this idea ?

I have mixed feelings myself as on the one hand I always feel that I have to support the cleaning up of our air, while on the other hand I do agree that motorways are at their best when the traffic is moving at the speeds that they and the roads were designed to carry them at.

Whats the use of speed limits if there is no police to enforce it. Very few stick to the 70 limit so it will be just a waste of time.

Even although there is already a lot of money spent on "traffic" policing, many if not most of this enforcing is now done by what is euphemistically called "traffic partnerships" whereby private companies - under local authority control - install traffic cameras and other techniques to catch the unwary motorists. The penalties are usually then sent automatically and by post. It is only when anyone fights the convictions that court-cases and the police come fully into use.

The actual number of people convicted of speeding is growing at an exponential rate.

Here is a quote from the website Speed Camera Uk.com:

The number of fixed penalty fines issued in England and Wales has risen seven-fold from around 260,000 in 2000-2001 to 1.8 million in 2003-2004. Speed cameras are reportedly currently netting more than 20m a year profits for the Treasury. Motorists caught by the cameras have three points added to their licence and pay a 60 fixed penalty.

I could not find any more up-to-date figures.

If any of you have more questions about the enforcing of speeding in the UK you can find it HERE

My old van won't even do sixty miles and hour. Evil or Very Mad

The problem, to me, is the very large numbers of big artics that hog the roads. They should all be taken off the roads and put on rails.

Off motorways I agree with you Papa but not on the M1 if you drive at 70 you seem as if you are standing still. Unless they put some cameras nothing will change.

I suppose you are right there Hughh, as motorists, of which I am one, almost always try to push the envelope as far as they think they can get away with.

If the speed limits are reduced to 60 mph then everybody will just drive at 70 mph and even if the speed limits are raised to 80 mph, ( as has been spoken about ), there is always going to be the ones that will then move up to 90 mph.

I guess that that is why they are now introducing the "Average-speed" cameras in many places.
