Who actually wins the wars ?

Post by zathrus on Thu 05 Dec 2013, 1:03 pm

As I looked around the internet today I found a news item in the Daily Telegraph that told us that Korea had built the biggest ship ever made, which was even bigger than the Empire State Building.

    Read it here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/transport/10496977/Worlds-largest-ship-bigger-than-Empire-State-Building-launches.html

This made me think about who actually won the wars of the past hundred years as the ones that were defeated are now amongst the richest countries in the world.

I am thinking of Japan, Germany, Korea, South Vietnam, and a few others.

Maybe it would have been better if we had lost the second world war as then we could have started again as they did.

Yes Zath'. I have often thought that it might not be so bad to be beaten in any world war if any country that has been beaten can then come back from scratch and develop into a commercial world power once again.

Mind you, I do think that the work ethics of all of these countries is much better than the work ethics of the big powers that take success for granted after winning these wars.

I do think that we in the West could learn a lot from these countries.

That's a big one ! Twisted Evil Laughing

If our shipbuilding interests had been supported when they needed it we could have been making ships that size too.

Now we have no shipbuilding, no steelmaking, no coalmining and little carmaking here and we have to buy this stuff from foreign companies.

Where did it all go wrong I wonder ?

Yes my dear we DID build ships that size in the past, especially in The Clyde and in Belfast. Now we are lucky if we get a bit of an aircraft carrier or a frigate to build.

If the English government get their way after Scottish independence we won't even get any of those English government contracts any more.

I think that you may be surprised, as once you are able to compete with the rest of the world you may find that Scotland will get a share of the shipbuilding that cannot be done anywhere else in the UK at the moment.

But WILL we be able to compete ? THAT, is the question.

Even if we do get independence we may find that the first few years on our own will be very hard and it will take a long time for us to be comparable with the likes of Sweden.

I just hope that independence will not be expected to be the immediate panacea for all ills, as it will not be.

Those of us in the independence camp that are aware of the difficulties we are going to face as an independent country know that it may take decades before we start to feel the benefits of this kind of freedom.
