    Free Solar Panels

Post by hughh on Sat 09 Nov 2013, 1:42 pm

www.greenenergypowersolutions.co.uk a government packed scheme. I have put my name down for it but I expect its for people on benefits or credits only and I will end up with a sale rep trying to sell them to me at a reduced price. If I was 10 years younger I would have given it some serious thought. It would take me ten years to get my money back so it will be case of no thank you.

Thanks for bringing that one to our attention Hughh.

I had not heard of this "Free Solar Panels" offer before under the "Green Energy" government scheme.

While you are probably right, that only the people on certain benefits might be offered this deal, ( I will look more deeply into it ), I think that the major drawback in this scheme are in the fact that the solar panels will never be owned by the people who have them installed and the company that installs them will take all of the "feed-in" tariff cash that will be generated by the panels.

They say that you will still get a certain amount of "free" energy, but I am not sure about how that might work.

You can find out more about it online. You get free energy and can sell back any extra you make at a fixed price. A good investment but at least ten years to get your money back.

Just be sure that it isn't a 'Rent-a-Roof' type arrangement, as these can make your house unsaleable.

That would be more like the buying of the solar panels, as if they were given and installed for free, even if the feed-in-tariff cash was taken back as part of the deal, some of the electricity generated could still be available for free and at no up-front layout.

I will get back to this when I get the reply from the firm concerned.

Yes HG, of course you are right that if the panels are not actually owned by you, the property owner, there could be problems afterwards when and if you come to sell your house.

I plan to find out about that point too.

Log on Google and you find other companies on the same scheme. If the panels are fitted free the company will remain the owner of the panels. Selling your home will have advantages and disadvantages. Some will be happy to get free energy, others who wish to install their own panels will not be interested. If you have the spare cash far better to install your own. Also keep in mind you will only get free energy during day light hours.

While the company that you originally indicated did say that they would supply "free solar panels", they said nothing about the "free" fitting of them. I would need this clarified before committing to any such deal.

I have already looked at the buying and installing of roof-mounted solar panels and also black water-heating panels too ( they are different as water runs through them and they do not use photovoltaics, as the true solar panels do ), but I have found that the buying and installing of the photovoltaic panels would be far too expensive for the average person even if that person were to get all of the electricity AND the "feed-in" tariff cash too.

Cost: The average domestic solar PV system is 3.5 to 4kwh and costs around 7,000 (including VAT at 5%), with the typical cost ranging from 5,500 to 9,500.

With six panels installed, ( the minimum for around 4kwh output ), it WOULD be at least ten years before they struck even as far as paying back the outlay cost is concerned. It is only after that point that they would start to deliver any kind of a saving towards household bills.

Your bit about the panels only generating electricity during daylight hours reminds me of the joke about the potential Irish astronaut who was telling his pal that he planned to fly to the sun, and when his pal asked why he was not worried about getting burned, he said: "Sure Oi'll only be floing at noight" Very Happyaffraid

Up date the green energy people are coming round on Tuesday. I asked while on the phone if I would get free panels as I am not receiving credits or benefits they said yes. To get a free boiler and insulation you must be on benefits or credits. If I was much younger I would I would have to give the free panel scheme much more thought. How much money the firm will get by having their panels on my roof no concern of mine. Its how much I will save on my energy bill. What ever they tell me I will divide by 2 which should give me a rough idea.

Thank you for the information Hugh.

Mind you I would still like to know if the "free panels" price included the installation cost.

If it did then there would be a small saving in electricity cost right away, even with the company taking the feed-in tariff money.

My Nephews already had an interview and he tells me installation are also free but any spare electric made is profit for the solar panel owner. for twenty years. They turned it down because they are both out all day and solar panel prices will fall over the coming years. As we are in all day we will make use of any free energy.

Have a meeting Papa, you are a bit younger than me so purchasing could well be the better option. Due to my age getting money off my energy bill now is the best option even if the energy saved covered the loan.

Although I am not actually "skint" Hughh, I cannot afford to buy and install a set of photovoltaic panels at around seven thousand pounds, as before I do it I am going to have to get my tiled roof cleaned and preserved at a further cost of about three thousand pounds.

The "free" panels option might be the best way for myself as I can find the money to clean and preserve the roof.

I guess I am just going to have to wait until I have an answer from the company you mentioned.

What you have got to find out is how much you will be saving on electric against the amount paid on a lone. Keep in mind any spare power you make you will be able to sell to the power network. Solar panels are dropping in price.

Hi Papa well I have ruled out the rent a roof idea. I going for the buy which will cost Just over 7000 for 16 panels 8 facing east and 8 facing west. The 7000 covers the installing and all the bits and pieces required. The panels are free if you have more than 8 panels. They are the new type which don't have to be facing south. The amount of electric I will not use during the day will be sold back which will pay for the electric used at night. I strongly recommend you find a company, covering your area and have a good discussion with them. In the long term it will save you a lot of money.

Give you even more to think about once you have all the details. With power prices going up year on years this will make an excellent investment. They have given us one year free time to pay so I hope to reduce this sum by leaving in the bank the amount I would have been paying for my electric plus the sell back of power not used. They are also giving us a few hundred by displaying their company sign. Any money I have to draw out our saving we can replace by a direct debit of the amount we would have been paying for our electric. These panels last for 35 years. The surveyor coming round this afternoon and the panels installed first week in December weather permitting.
