    Big stores accused.....

Post by papa_umau on Sun 03 Nov 2013, 1:29 pm

A report from website MySupermarket has shown that stores including Tesco Sainsbury's and ASDA are accused of artificially raising the prices of bottles of wine so that they can then say that they have cut the prices by half at a later date.

Website "mysupermarket" found a zigzag pattern to prices it tracked for a year at the big stores, where sixty percent of wine is on special offer.

( I will not go into the prices of the actual brands as they are too numerous to mention here ).

Sadly, the stores are not breaking the law when they do this, even if they are certainly breaking the "spirit" of the law when they apply these practices, as there is no doubt that by doing this they are deliberately attempting to confuse their customers.

A former Sainsbury's wine boss, Alan Cheesman, said that: "some offers were blatantly manufactured".

Well folks, there you have it, "right from the horse's mouth", so to speak.

All this does is confirms that the wine I buy for the wife and daughter will continue to come from Lidl and Aldi as they almost always undercut the big boys.

But, don't they do this with most of their products, never mind the wine ?

Many other shops do this too, especially the half a dozen white-goods stores and furniture stores.

I really don't know how they get away with it.

There is supposed to be a minimum time period between the product being shown at the full price before it can be so heavily discounted, but I do not think that this rule is enforced by the watchdogs, or even if it was deliberately and previously shown at a ridiculously high price so that the discount looks attractive afterwards.

It is one of those marketing tricks that the watchdogs just do not seem up to dealing with.
