Tidal power an untouched reserve ?

Post by Angie baby on Sat 08 Jun 2013, 11:10 am

When we see the amounts of money that are thrown at the building of wind-farms I wonder why not more is invested in tidal energy.

The effect that the moon has on our tides sees massive amounts of free energy going untapped.

"They" have talked and talked about harnessing this force of nature and yet they have done very little about it.

Maybe they are soon going to wake up and smell the coffee when the lights start going out of the want of green energy.

Here's an article I found today that addresses this idea:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/energy/10106187/Britains-tides-could-become-an-energy-goldmine.html

What do you think about this type of green energy ?

A great thread-starter Angie and one very close to my own heart.

I have been trying to persuade anyone who will listen that wind-farms are not the only way to go if we want to use the "renewables".

Up here in bonnie Scotland we have been developing hi-tech machines to harness wave and tidal power for many years and over the past few years some of them have went on to be manufactured as full-blown electricity generators tied into the national grid.

We need MORE of these machines to be bought and installed by national and local governments as if we did we might find that we could generate enough green power to be able to do away with filthy and dangerous fossil-fuel-fired and nuclear power-stations.

It is expected that by 2020 Scotland will generate ALL of it's power needs by such green methods and will then be able to export the extra power generated this way to the power-hungry South.

    So true Angie.

Whenever I go to the seaside I often think about the untapped power of the waves and the tides and see no reason why these forms of power-generation should not be used for the betterment of our lives.

These methods of power-generation might even get rid of the ugly windmills in the long run, never mind the fossil-fuel burning and the nuclear power stations.

I am with you all the way one that one Zath'.

Just looking at the massive energy that is displayed in the waves, it is a shame that we cannot harness that wasted energy better.

Why they have not gone down this route surprises me they have talked about it but never come to anything. Could be cost or still looking for the right system to convert this energy. And there is the added problem, great idea but not in my back yard.

Yes Hughh, the NIMBYs have stopped a lot of technology.

Up here in Scotland we have been building and developing wave and tidal powered generators for a number of years but it is the interest of the oil and energy people that they never get off the ground or into the sea.
