Tesco leading the way on food waste ?

Post by papa_umau on Mon 27 May 2013, 12:58 pm

Supermarket chain Tesco has pledged to use its scale and clout to reduce the amount of food wasted by its customers and elsewhere in its international supply chain.

After criticism of the prevalence of supermarket "bogofs" ( buy one get one frees ) and other deals which help to create an annual mountain of food waste, the UK's largest retailer said its food promotions would, in the future, not be designed to encourage people to buy large amounts of food with a short shelf life.

That's all fine and good, but what about the millions of tons of food waste that all supermarkets put to skips that has not been sold ?

Also, why don't they drop the price of food that is going past it's sell-buy - but not safe-to-use-by-date - so that many of the British consumers that are struggling to buy food and who often finish up at food banks can actually afford to buy this food rather than it being chucked out.

I know that they do have small sections where they offer last-sell-by-dated food at discounts but I have found that even this food is still priced at levels that make it expensive for the poorer families.

What do you good folks think of this idea ?

Yeah Paps, they have no room to dare to lecture us on how to cut down on waste.

Mind you, I have heard that with the rise of many more food-banks in starving Britain a lot of the food that is dished out there comes from food in supermarkets that is past it's sell-by date but is still safe to eat.

It is an indictment on the way that the government are running this country that this should be the situation at all.

The Tory coalition should be ashamed of themselves that that is the legacy of their actions.

Yes mate, there are more food banks and soup-kitchens now out there than there was just after the last war.

THAT, is a statistic that this government should be thoroughly ashamed of.
