    Don't watch daytime TV....

Post by papa_umau on Thu 02 May 2013, 11:31 am

Being retired, if nothing is happening in the garden and the weather is intemperate, the wife and I - like many others in our situation - sometimes watch daytime TV.

It has become obvious to me that daytime TV is being deliberately targetted at people who are stuck at home and who either do not go to work through unemployment or disability or being retired, as almost all channels available are now crammed with adverts for, payday loans companies, debt-aid services, accident claims services, bingo games services, and other easy gambling services available either on mobile phones or tablets or computers.

This bombardment of temptation opportunities makes daytime television into a minefield of hurdles for the unwary.

Maybe it is time that such adverts should be either restricted in numbers or even taken out of the daytime television schedules altogether.

    What say you ?

People like me, who have to work for a living, will never see those adverts, so that is nothing that really bothers me.

Of course that does confirm that these companies are targeting the idle, the sick and the old who are stuck at home during the working day.

You are right of course that these afternoon programmes are targetted at the ones that, for whatever reason, are not at work.

The most insidious of these programmes are the pay-day loans companies as they know that many of the people that are unemployed are screaming out for their money.

I blame the Tories for this situation too BTW.

    Hi all,

You are dead right Paps. I see a little more of it now I am retired. That said one has the option of a 'on/off' switch, but some folks will just be tempted.

My dear wife unfortunately is a fan of QVC and I have noticed the odd parcel arriving in the post !!!

Yes, the old "on/off" switch. It is dead easy to switch on but not so easy to switch off.

Many thousands of clever "marketeers" - as I like to call them - have spent many millions of hours finding out what makes us tick and how they can work their ways into our psyche, and get under our skin.

Sadly, they are often successful and because of our own secret desires they can get a grip on the ones that are vulnerable this way. If this did not work they would not do it.

It is a constant battle within which many of us have no idea we are taking part.

Are you a secret psychologist ?

REALLY???? Since when? Anyway-no one ever heard of this new invention, sheets of processed wood pulp with ink formed into letters on each and every one? Sometimes they even form the ink into pictures. Very diverting on rainy days.

    ""are targeting the idle""

I see we have a "judger" in our midst. How dare you make such a judgement about the unemployment from the safe haven of your home zathrus.

Angie-baby, yes it's the Tories at fault here. But who votes for them in the first place ???????

Fewer and fewer people are doing that and that is good as far as I am concerned.

Remember that they just got in last time round with the skin of their teeth and the support of the Liberal Democrats and without that coalition there would be NO Tories in power.

    Ivanhoe quoted

    ""are targeting the idle""

And to understand this we have to consider what does the word "idle" mean.

It means to not be working and that condition has a million reasons behind it and does not indict these people as being necessarily lazy or good for nothing, as you seem to think.

And you pulled him up for using it when that word is in fact a completely valid one to describe when a person is not working, for ANY of many possible reasons.

I do not think that our Zathrus is trying to "judge" ( your word ), anybody by the use of the word "idle" and the meaning of that word, that seems to upset you no end, is in your own mind.

As Zathrus is one of those people that does actually work for a living and because of this he usually only comes here once a week, I feel that it is my place to defend him when he gets wrongfully attacked in his absence.
