    Government "Workfare" scheme attacked.

Post by papa_umau on Wed 13 Feb 2013, 11:17 am

Graduate, Cait Reilly, succeeds in legal challenge to programme under which she was required to work unpaid at discount store.

Many British people have already questioned whether it is morally acceptable to force people to do unpaid work so as not to lose their benefits and now we see a recent ruling where a university graduate was forced to work at Poundland for nothing so that she could continue to get benefits while she looked for work that was suitable for her degree.

Admit it, this workfare scheme, that originated in America, is just another way to get work done for nothing or on the cheap.

It will be interesting to see how this one stands up in the courts.

While I can understand the need - by some - for the people on benefits to work for their benefits, I do think that it is bad policy to force them to work for companies that should be employing - and paying - people properly to do the work that they need done.

One way would be for these companies to pay a little extra on top of the benefits so that then the people who are forced to do this work for nothing do not finish up feeling like slaves.

Of course, if these companies want to eventually take on these people at a full rate, or even a full minimum wage rate, then they could be taken off unemployment benefit completely.

Done this way we would see a true easing off from benefits and into full-time work for the people who want to work.
