    Obama advises Cameron on Europe.

Post by papa_umau on Sat 19 Jan 2013, 12:42 pm

President Barack Obama tells David Cameron: "Keep UK in the EU"

OBAMA'S stark warning comes as the Prime Minister continues to posture dangerously on the UK's position within the European Union.

The White House has revealed the US President told the Prime Minister in no uncertain terms that Washington wanted Britain to remain in the EU.

Cameron had phoned Obama to set out his speech on Britain’s relationship with Brussels, which he had been due to give yesterday in Holland, but the White House made it clear that Obama put pressure on the PM during the call.

A spokesman said: “The President underscored our close alliance with the UK and said we value a strong UK in a strong European Union, which makes critical contributions to peace, prosperity and security around the world.”

Obama’s stark warning came as top US General Stanley McChrystal said any more British defence cuts would damage the special relationship between the two countries.

US defence secretary Leon Panetta arrived in London yesterday to ram home the message to Cameron.

Extracts from a speech the PM was planning to make showed he intended to make it clear that he wants the UK to play a “committed and active” part in the EU.

But he was also planning to warn that, if changes are not made to address the eurozone crisis, economic competitiveness and falling public support, “the danger is that Europe will fail and the British people will drift towards the exit”.

Downing Street attempted to play down the row yesterday – after releasing a summary of the phone call between the two leaders with no mention of their disagreement over Europe.

But Labour said the revelation showed increasing concern from the Americans at Cameron’s position over Europe.

Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander said: “President Obama’s warnings reflects the fear on both sides of the Atlantic that the Prime Minister risks sleepwalking Britain out of Europe and risking British jobs and investment in the process.”

Well, there you have it folks....

Poor old David Cameron is caught between a rock and a hard place as he, on the one hand, wants to tell everybody that a strong and continued bond with Europe will be good for Britain's economy, but, on the other hand, he is getting ripped apart by the rabid Eurosceptics on his back-benches and in the 1922 committee as he dawdles with any possible European referendum.

I don't think he can do both !

    What do you think ?

    What a cheek Obama's got.

Even although I think that Cameron certainly is suffering under the pressure that his back-benchers are putting him under at the moment I don't think that he has an answer that is going to please everybody.

If he ever gets enough bottle to run a referendum on getting out of Europe he can afterwards tear up his Prime Minister's job and hide in some dark place until the fallout from that decision finally settles.

I would certainly not like to be in his shoes at the moment.

As I see it, if Obama is interested enough in Britain to make such a comment during these days of great turmoil in America, we could do well to listen to what he is saying.

Then again, the intransigence showed by Cameron and Osborne just goes to prove that they are not listening to anybody.
