To take the thread back on topic, Watchdog reported that although we in Mainland Britain are experiencing Power Bills increasing, in Northern Ireland they are falling.

Could be something to do with having a Regulatory body with teeth, of course!

    Cheers, HG

H/G. Could the Utilities be nationalized in Northern Ireland ?

No, sadly they are not !

The gas and electricity companies are set up under the free-trade rules found within the European laws and as such they are fragmented into many private companies.

The water and sewerage industry is like the industry in Scotland as while it is run under corporate laws it is wholly owned and controlled by the Northern Ireland government.

The Northern Irish rail and bus networks are fully government owned and controlled under the name "Translink".

    Hope that information helps Ivanhoe.

Papa, Remind me, but which part of Ireland is in Europe ?

Don't be so obtuse Clapco. While the Irish Republic is fully part of the EU, Northern Ireland is only "in" as a part of the UK and as you already know, we are only playing at being members of the EU.

Even as such we still have to follow many of the rules that are built into the agreement that we DO have with the EU.

Papa, So it's Southern Ireland that is fully in the EU, sharing the Euro. Do Southern Ireland also share in Europe's social and economic culture ?

They are full members and as such they have to share and follow all of the rules that are in force that apply to such full members.

There are differences in community-policy between full members but these differences are not large enough to get them into trouble with Brussels.

Do Southern Ireland pensioners receive the higher State pension on offer in Europe ? Do they have our unjust council tax ?

HERE is the information that the ROI give to their citizens concerning their state pension and if you want to compare that with the rules laid down in the EU you are going to have to do that research yourself as I am not educated enough on these fine differences.

Google is a wonderful tool if it is used as it is meant to be.

Papa, I have been using Google for such research since I have been on the internet, and you are right about the finer details, but I just thought you might have known the amounts paid to Southern Ireland pensioners, and UK Pensioners. ?

    Strewth.....

There are very few states in Europe that are not members of the EU.

Flipping heck, even most of the ex-Soviet states are now EU members and the very few that are not are not worth considering in this discussion anyway.

For your information here is what the European Union looks like:

And HERE is what it looks like in more detail.

Er, no. I am not as clever as you sometimes seem to think I am.
