Do you use Facebook or G-Mail on your Android ?

Post by zathrus on Thu 05 Jul 2012, 1:57 pm

Well, I do both and I was quite shocked to read about the latest bit of malware that is now out there.

It seems that as you go about the daily-use of your phone and you connect to Facebook or G-Mail that this latest nasty can get into your phone and present you with a very plausible offer to automatically connect your phone/internet-use to your bank account. Of course this offer is a scam just intended for you to give out your banking details so that the animals behind this "trojan" can steal this data.

It is good that the anti-malware people do know about this as they should be quick to provide a fix for this kind of virus. Until they do, it is sensible that you know about this and can recognise it when you see it.

I am actually quite surprised that mobile phones have not been attacked in this way too often yet when we realise that so many of these nasties are available for computers connencted to the internet.

Anyway, here is where I found out about this so that you can read about it for yourself: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2189300/action-fraud-warns-zeus-malware-strain-facebook-gmail-users-risk

Now you have me scared rigid over this.

At least, after your heads-up we are now informed about this threat.

    Thanks Zathrus. I love you

Yeah, thanks from me too Zath' !

As many here know, while I keep my Facebook entries private I also use a G-mail account as my webmail client.

We are all going to have to watch out for this latest scam.

    Sometims I'm glad I'm a dinosaur, I don't get into Smartphones, and I won't get a Contract phone.

    Cheers, HG

Actually HG that is a very good point: The one I mean is "contract" mobile phones.

Because they offer the very latest phones for free on fixed contracts, ( sometimes up to eighteen months or even two years now ), many people are coerced into taking out these contracts. ( they average around 30.00 per month ), so that they can get their hands onto such phones without any payment up-front.

If they only stopped and thought about it for a minute they would realise that over that eighteen month period they could have bought TWO very good and top-of-the-range phones for the 540.00 that they pay for their contract..

Of course the main trap here is the bundle of things that are offered for free along with the phone, like large data allowances and a high number of texts and minutes built in.

Personally, I feel that I get all that I want out of my very up-to-date Samsung Galaxy Ace that I spent only 120.00 on free and clear and out of contract. So long as I use free Wi-Fi nodes and my own TalkTalk wireless router I do not incur any data charges that using 3G for getting on-line and for sending e-mails etc' might cost me. The texts only cost 14p a time, each time I want to send one and that does me fine.

I guess, as my ole Irish granny used to say: "You pays your money and you takes your choice !"

I mean every word - in the best sense - Clapco, and only you would see "patronising", ( is the correct spelling BTW ), and "sexism" - in genuine warmth.

I am sure that our "Hell's Granny" does not think I am being sexist when I call her "my dear" as she knows that we hold her in the highest regard here on ROB.

I really hate to name-call Clapco, but there are certainly times when you fully fill the description of "On-line Troll".
