    Going to the dogs

Post by Guest on Wed 09 May 2012, 3:28 pm

Can anyone on this forum give me some advice on dogs?

I am currently house sitting for a wealthy friend of mine who has a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a West Highland Terrier. The Westie is wonderful - compliant, obedient, loving, quiet, faithful indeed an ideal companion (though like most things Scottish a bit lazy), whereas the CKC is completely brain dead, untrainable, noisy, dirty, though equally loving.

My question is, having never owned a dog (yes really), are they really man's best friend or do they simply respond to the person who is most likely to give them food? There seems little difference between their behaviour with the owner and I. I would be curious to know from someone who has experience.

Maybe it is true that I AM becoming a cynical old sod as I see a hidden story inside that one about the doggies.

I also think it is rather strange for anyone to come to a consumer forum for advice on the care and behaviour of dogs.

You might be better going HERE than asking doggy questions on ROB.

It is 'off topic' but your forum seems to be more general discussion than consumer affairs and as your fans seem happy to share their opinions I thought it worth a punt on something a little controversial.

Nothing more - but remember Paps just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't getting at you!

I don't know about you Clapco, but I have found that it is good to have a small helping of paranoia now and again.

Anyway, as it is the Off-topic sub-forum I guess you have every right to ask off-topic questions in this forum.

This - of course - does not mean that you are necessarily going to find any experts on dog behaviour here and that is why I published the link for you.

Dogs go to whoever feeds them most. After that they really don't have enough grey matter to do/be anything other than a shedding, slobbering, stench ridden, hairball. However-they do taste nice if cooked correctly.

YUK...at the thought of it ! pale

I have often wondered what drives people to own dogs when cats are much better "people" because they make no bones about telling their "masters" that they don't really "own" them as they take the love that they want and give little in return that could be measured as loyalty.

It is also curious that right across the world the poorest people in that world always seem to have a cur running around their feet and their hovel and that neither abject-poverty nor even ultimate riches dictates the reasoning behind the ownership of a dog or dogs.

Mind you, there is no doubt that dogs have been used as status symbols for many hundreds of years and the times when the Hollywood rich-bitches walk down the boulevard with a dog's head sticking out of their Louis Vuitton bags and the hard-men of the slums of Britain take their bull-terrier cross's down their weed-strewn streets on a bit of string will continue to ensure that dogs will always have some kind of status in our human society.

Personally I can see perfectly well why Clapco would come on here with his question about dogs. Large spread of people who probably have more experience with canines than he does. He, as a non-dog person, probably doesn't know many people with dogs. He's doing a favour for a friend and (going by the gender of the owner) may well wish to not screw up in order to gain favour with the lady.

......Invective deleted...... ( Please try not to get personal.....all ).
