Top pay. The free-market. Thatcher started it all.

Post by Parliament.... on Tue 22 Nov 2011, 1:07 pm

This is the very same deregulated free market exploitive system that allows people to buy houses and push up prices for everybody else. That provides people with profits and shares in Utility's while charges increase, hitting the poor.

This is the very same system that allows people to pay a very low "income tax", while stealth taxes cripple the poor.

This is the very same political system that states the elderly must live on a pittance, while being means tested for demeaning handouts.

This is the very same system creating mass homelessness in Britain.

This is the very same system that Thatcher started in the 80's, it is called the deregulated free market, and it allows people to do as they wish, but people should not expect the State to catch them should they suddenly become one of the exploited, instead of remaining an exploiter.

This very same system always comes from the right of the Tory party in Government because they know the British people will fall for it every time.

Because the British largely, have and always will vote with their wallets.

Cameron continues saying "we are all in it together", and we are, but we cannot see it, because we dont want to look.

Just dont get ill, unemployed, or old, because when you do, you will also find yourself being exploited, and it's not a nice feeling.

But we British never change, and that's why right wing Capitalism appeals to us, until we are hit, personally, but by then, it's all to late.

Aw get a life m8 Thatcher resigned over 20 years ago! I know she was good but not so good as to still be shaping the face of British politics.

Wake up and move on? You repeat the same old rubbish that made Labour unelectable until Bliar came along. Times have changed.

WRONG Clapco..... if fact you couldn't be any more wrong as the legacy that Thatcher left us is STILL flowing round the annals of the Tory machine.

If we let it happen people like Cameron WILL try to turn his party into a Thatcherite party once again - if only to please his hard-line back bench rebels.

That is one awful happening in the past that we should NEVER forget as it could easily rise up again.

Sorry Paps but you are the one who is wrong - just think it through. Most people younger than 38 don't know who Thatcher is. Of those above this age I would assert that half remember her as a hero so the new Labour scare machine is actually talking to.....itself.

    Keep up Papaumau!

I may be wrong Clapco, but I believe Pap is refering to the core of this country, the policy making and lack of it since the 80's.

All the time British Government's retain the free market without State intervention, Thatcher's legacy will contune for a thousand years.

Yes Clapco...Thatcher is just a spectre on the recent past horizons but THATCHERISM is alive and well and being practiced in as many places as anyone cares to look TODAY.

Even the young folk that you speak of who probably don't know who Thatcher was are still suffering under her influence on monetarism today. Her "free market system" - uncontrolled - is the system that brings the worst out of even the best of people and it is the system that turns greedy people into the ones who destroy society as it should be.

If this system was properly controlled we would not see rampant cartelisation - in the guise of price-matching - practiced by the people who are supposed to compete with each other and we would then see a market that was more fair to all of the consumers that are forced to take part in it.

Maybe you should try to "keep up" Clapco as it seems that in your desire to worship Thatcherism and her self-serving principles you are just becoming one of her clones.

Sorry papas but where do you get the idea I worship Thatcherism from?

Sure every time you mention her name as the root of all evil I protest but that is because your obsession with the Iron Lady has completely destroyed your objectivity, not because I support her. Our current problems are as a result of 13 years of Labour Government and Braun's mis-handling of the UK economy. Perhaps if you focussed on that you may stand a chance of righting some wrongs.

Clapco, The New Labour Government were not "traditional" Labour, how many more times must this be stated.????????????

New Labour under Blair and Brown embraced Thatcher's fundamental right wing policies for 13 years.

And our economy will never be handled correctly by our right wing politicians.

We need social housing, a decent minimum wage, a fair tax system, and an Industrial and Manufacturing base, then our politicians can let the economy" take care of itself.

What we have had since the 80's are economists, not socialists, and this is our problem.

I don't know how strongly any of you are for or against Thatcherism, ( it does still exist ), but blind support for or against a principle founded in Thatcher's uncontrolled free-market-system is what nearly brought Britain and the rest of the world, ( including America ), to it's knees.

Thatcherism is STILL practiced at the heart of Toryism, even although she would be as well dead and buried, as her legacy lives on and WILL live on long after she has shuffled off this mortal coil.

To defend against Thatcherism and all of it's pitfalls we have to REMEMBER it so that we are aware when it is being applied.

This is no time to be starting to bury our heads in the proverbial sand.

AGAIN... we see the wisdom that Scotland has gained because of being the greatest sufferers during Thatcher's reign - not being seen or remembered in the rest of the country.

I think that this is all part and parcel of the "if it doesn't effect us why should we bother about it" syndrome, where because the English and the Welsh and the Northern Irish were not hit nearly as hard as Scotland was during Thatcher's reign of terror some of them not only don't remember what she did to us but they still hold her as some form of unrealistic champion of some kind.

Maybe the people of England Wales and Northern Ireland SHOULD have suffered as we did as if they had they would then - just like us - have thrown her and all of her Tory bully-boys totally out of their countries.

Even now the Tories only have one miserable representative from Scotland in Westminster and for a very long time they had NONE.

As my old Irish grannie used to say: "Before one can chastise a man for doing anything, one has to have walked a mile in his shoes !"
