    The new Health Lottery.....

Post by papa_umau on Fri 07 Oct 2011, 3:49 pm

We have all been bombarded by adverts for the new "Health Lottery" and under such advertising we might be forgiveen for saying that there are quite enough ways to gamble being presented to us these days without needing ANOTHER national lottery.

On the TV and the internet these days there are also around a dozen or more new BINGO pages and casino gambling pages to attract us into throwing our hard-earned readies away and I wonder if these companies are regulated at all or is it a free-for-all when it comes to offering us more and more ways to gamble.

Getting back to the new Health Lottery......

I was considering the chances we might have for winning anything of any decent amount on this new lottery after they said...and I quote: "Seven times more likely to win our top prize". ( Seven times more likely than....what ? ).

When we consider that to win the 100,000 top prize we have to pick FIVE correct numbers out of five choices and this is out of a total of FIFTY numbers in the new lottery.

If this is the case then how can this new lottery have a better chance of winning than the old National Lotto can when we consider that in that lottery we get the chance to pick SIX numbers out of FORTY NINE possibles and on the new Health Lottery the choice is only FIVE numbers out of a possible FIFTY.

I think that I will give that one a miss !

    Comments anybody ?

Yes Papa, there is too much gambling offered on the internet and on the TV these days and even I have been tempted by some of the great offers made on those ubiquitous bingo sites. I don't give in though even although I must admit that I do like the bingo down the old cinema hall now and again.

As far as this new Health Lottery is concerned; I think it will be one lottery too far and it will die a death soon after launching. Thanks for warning us about the actual chances we might have of winning anything big.

In fact, if my memory serves me right, is this new lottery not just run on a very similar set of rules as the Irish Lottery is run ?

I don't do it either BTW ! Evil or Very Mad

Yes my dear, the new Health Lottery IS run on the same lines as the Irish lottery is run.

I would advise everybody to give BOTH of them a miss.

I used to be a serious gambler - on the horses - but there came a point when I had to give it up completely as it was starting to ruin my life.

Gambling, like the other addictions, is truly an addiction too.

It does look as if the adverts we are seeing on the telly at the moment are there to brainwash us into trying it.

What gets my goat about this lottery is that a percentage of the prize money goes to "local health issues".

    WHAT ?

This looks to me as if what is actually happening here is just another way to provide cheapo or free private healthcare without the government spending any money on it or the NHS. In fact it looks as if they are actually taxing us twice by this dodgy windup.

One good thing is that we can choose not to participate in this fiddle and we can let it wither and die. I certainly will not be doing it !

There has been a lot of negative press surfacing around on the net in the run up to the Health Lottery. I personally think the Health lottery is a good idea, when do you ever think about donating to your non NHS local community. I can honestly say I never do nor do I know who they are!! Yes it is only 20p contributed for every pound but at least these charities are getting something. I live in Doncaster and I rather young teens and families are helped in my area.

Hi Earnest.... and welcome to R.O.B. !

Yes I do see what you are getting at and I am sure that there are plenty of worthy causes out there for us to get into in as many ways as we are willing to...BUT...because this so-called "charity" has started off by telling us lies about the actual chances of any of us getting the three main prizes, I for one am very wary of anything new like this.

This, like any other gamble on or offline, is just another way to throw good money after bad and I am sure that many people agree that there are quite enough opportunities to gamble out there already.

Then there is the thought that we don't really know where this very poor 20% of our money is going or who it is going to help that - at the moment - might be getting direct finance from government sources.

The Prime Minister, David Cameron, is very hot on what he calls "The Big Society", but all that this adds up to is a lot of extra help coming from the people, who do it FOR NOTHING so that his treasury can save money by not financing such "noble" causes directly.

I believe that this new "Health Lottery" is exactly what Mr Cameron wants in this direction as while people gamble on this new lottery there will be more money coming out of our pockets in just another sneaky indirect tax on top of the other ubiquitous sneaky taxes that are becoming so prevalent everywhere we look.

Sorry Earnest, but I believe that this new lottery is just one lottery too far.

You talk about "good causes" attached to the new Health Lottery Earnest and we already know about the "good causes" attached to the ordinary national lottery, don't we ?

What in fact happens is that the national lottery gives a percentage of the money we gamblers lose to local causes whether we like them or not. I think that this new way of levering money out of our pockets rather than paying for these services directly will be like that too.

I agree that this is just another tax that we are being asked to pay and even if we do have a choice whether to pay it or not by even more gambling, I think that we should quite simply vote with our feet and walk away from this latest con-job.

I agree Zathrus as as far as I am concerned I have never won anything from any competitions never mind actually gambling with a forelorn hope of winning.

All mugs, every one of them.

You're right babes, they certainly are a bunch of mugs and I guess that they will probably get even more of them to do this new lottery in their hope of getting more money to gamble with. Shocked

I mean, has anybody ever seen a poor bookie or casino boss ?

I once saw something that told me that Dianne Thompson, the CEO of the national lottery, is actually paid a million pounds a year, every year. Not bad eh ?
